Manowar - Cancel Hellfest Appearance
To the great disappointment of their fans, Manowar canceled their appearance at Hellfest Open Air Festival just hours before they were supposed to take the stage. Both the festival's organizers and the band issued statements that you can read below.
Hellfest Open Air Festival statement:
"Despite an on-site presence on Thursday 20 June, the teams and members of the Manowar band decided to leave the festival site. The concert of the artist Manowar scheduled this Friday, June 21 will not be possible for reasons beyond our control. We are sincerely sorry for all the fans of this artist and more broadly for all the fans of Hellfest."
Manowar statement:
"Regarding Hellfest (June 21, 2019)
After 18 months of tireless work and preparation we arrived at the Hellfest site yesterday, ready to play today. The Hellfest organizers obstructed our efforts to put on the epic show we had promised. Despite what you may hear or read, the Hellfest organizers did have control over the circumstances that prevented our performance.
"We always have and always will fight to give our fans 100%. Our French fans and press know, if Manowar come to France and are unable to perform, the fault does not lie with us. Remember the Élysée Montmartre. We are very sorry that you are being made to suffer. We want you to know that everything we do is for our fans. We stand together with all of you as we always have, and we will not allow anyone to lessen the quality of our shows. Be very sure the truth will come out! Thank you to the Greatest Fans In The World for your continued loyalty and support.

I spent my day laughing, whenever the random thought of Hellfest, Manowar or Manowar fans came into mind, wondering what could possibly be the reason for that cancelation. I know Manowar are real men playing on ten but I couldn't exepect "We canceled because we love our fans and weren't able to unleash 100% of our epicness at them"

I have never come across a band so protective of their brand, so self centered and narrow minded as Manowar. If Joey DeMaio could sit in your living room telling you which song you have to listen to at specific times he definitely would. I would genuinely be surprised if the reasoning for the cancelation preventing them 100% from playing without the possibility of an compromise for the sake of the fans. Sometimes you have to bite the bitter apple in order to do the things you love in front of the people who support and love you, people look at you as role models and in Manowars case..worship you. I'm not saying Hellfest is blameless in this, it would be stupid to think so. But the fact that they're making Hellfest the villain and make themselves the heroes of the day is just selfless and mind bogling, not allow anyone to lessen the quality of our shows my ass. People have so much respect, faith and devotion for this band, if Eric Adams went on the stage alone telling stories or humming for an hour people on the front row would still be headbanging. I'm one of the few people who genuinely regard Gods Of War as one of their best albums, and I have definitely considered seeing them live on their last tour. But the way this band do stuff makes it extremely easy not to go, especially the way they have done things lately. At this point Joey DeMaio is running what would be the metal worlds equivalent to the kardashians.

I certainly have no proof or anything, but I'm sure the cause is the decibel level. A new law was voted last autumn in France (just discovered that), putting the limit to 102 dB (instead of 105 dB previously). And while Manowar have always wanted to play much louder, Hellfest are certainly forced to respect the law... I can certainly imagine Manowar making a ragequit over that

So, Womanowar ditched another concert because it was not as 'metal' as their whatever standard. These guys can afford to do this shit as they have such a fanatical fanbase, even if Joey would piss in their mouth they'd think it is nectar. Awful...

This reminds me of my first Hellfest in 2007 when Korn cancelled for what I remember being stated as "safety reasons." Poor announcer was booed at loudly. I hope the crowd gave a good booing on the site, that someone recorded it and put that on the internet. Absolutely ridiculous band, this Manowar. I wasn't there but when Twisted Sister arrived a mere hour before their show at Graspop one year, they decided to go on stage without make up. Twisted Sister. Without. Make up. They played because some people were there because of them. And they continued playing shows without make up. I saw them sometime later at one of Hellfests and they put on one authentic performance. If Manowar can't play a show in a best-effort manner because some part of their stage show was denied, they have no respect for their fans and I don't think they are worth anyone's money really. I'll also allow for the organizers to have made a turd of this situation. But in either situation I'd have respected the band more if they just came on stage and explained why they can't play in person to thousands and thousands of fans rather than just leaving. I think there's more fun coming up as the story evolves. I.

If anyone is still somewhat interested in this story, here's an interview with Hellfest's boss Ben Barbaud. He's being very dismissive on the Manowar question (at 16:40), and evokes a "strictly contractual problem". He says he doesn't doubt the case will be brought to court sooner or later, so he tries to protect the organizers' part by not saying too much (at 41:40). He points out that Hellfest already received big and bold bands in the past, and nothing went wrong for those times. Another detail he adds is that Manowar had sold special tickets (packages) under their brand, for people to attend their concert + meet the band + have access to the rest of the festival. Manowar's team was supposed to manage the entries of their special customers. As the Manowar fans arrived on the site with no one to take care of them, the Hellfest team had to freely allow them access to the festival. (at 24:15). He explains that Sabbaton made room in their agenda especially to attend Manowar's concert, since they're long-time fans of them. When Sabbaton got the news about Manowar, they came on their own towards Hellfest's organizers to propose a replacement. Hellfest agreed immediately.
