Conception - Reveal 'Monument In Time' Single

"Monument In Time", the latest brand new Conception track from the forthcoming release of the State Of Deception deluxe album, has premiered online. Vocalist Roy Khan describes it as "a compressed document of joy, challenges and hardships we have encountered and overcome as a band. It also constitutes the spirit of which we approach every song we make." Check it out now via YouTube below.

Describing the writing process, guitarist Tore Østby explained: "When composing this piece I combined my love for orchestral music and dramatic choirs with hard rock. It’s an exciting way of writing that I am exploring, which also allows me to expand my expression. We are super proud of it and curious about how it will be perceived!"

Sounds like Kamelot circa Poetry for the Poisoned. Not bad, as I really liked that phase of theirs.
Quite an ominous sound.

I posted this video in the shout box a couple of days ago, got completely ignored, but sometimes the discussion there are a doozey TBH.

Nice song, I look forward to the full length album.

funny how no one says Kamelot sounds like Conception.

I don't see it how it sounds like Poetry for the Poisoned. You can prove me wrong though, I won't get upset.

Poetry for the Poisoned was a mess for me, worst album with Roy, but that's another story...

Well I think it sounds a lot like Poetry for the Poisoned (For me it follows a clear pattern of: Mid tempo-dark-prog + orquestration.)

Except for the solo which is clearly more atmospheric and less power metal than what kamelot would have gone for, and the last choir.

As to whether is Kamelot who sounds like Conception (specially in Poetry...) that's a good point, I don't always associate orquestration with Kamelot rather than Conception but the mid tempo thing is clearly Conception.

All in all, a very good song an a promising new record to come, that's always good in my book.

Well JoHn, you do make some interesting points.

To me Kamelot made some changes to their sound and, by the end of Roy's era, they were very much like Conception. However, from the big majority of time - I'm gonna say until Ghost Opera - they were more power metal than anything else. Only when songs like Human Stain, Rise From the Ashes or Rule The World started to be the norm and not the weird cousin in a power metal record do I think they became more like Conception.

And just like Callisto, I also tend to associate orchestrations with Kamelot, but I think that's because of the way Kamelot uses them - which is usually in this grandiose manner rather than a complement to the specific song in which they are being applied to.

Of course this is all conjecture and personal opinions - mine specifically based on a perception and understanding of things which, for all intends and purposes, might be completely wrong.

Cheers

In that regard, I think Poetry was a deliberate attempt to deviate from their overused (at that time) power metal formula from Epica.

At that time for me it was a refreshing change, but it's very probable that Khan helped move things into Conception territory.

It's a chicken and egg debate

I also believe you are right.
To my understanding, with the power metal formula you're talking about they could not do a better record than The Black Halo and they knew that, that's why they changed it. However, let's not forget that was also when Oliver Palotai - the one who actually writes the orchestrations now- got into the band. So all that, plus the fact that you mentioned regarding Roy helping deviate things towards more Conception-like grounds, I think were the main reasons for said change.

Oh btw, the chicken and egg debate has an answer: the egg came first laid by an animal that was not a chicken. All hail Darwinism!
