Tomas Lindberg, the iconic frontman of Swedish metal band At The Gates, has died at the age of 52 after a battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare form of cancer affecting the mouth and palate. The news of Lindberg’s passing was shared by longtime friend and fellow musician David Isberg (known for his work as vocalist with Bloodofjupiter, and formerly with Opeth).

Lindberg was a key figure in shaping the melodic death metal genre, often referred to as the "Gothenburg sound" in reference to the band’s hometown. With At The Gates, he helped lay the groundwork for an entire movement in heavy music, influencing countless bands across the globe with the group’s groundbreaking albums, including Slaughter Of The Soul.

Tomas Lindberg also handled vocal duties in several other bands throughout his career, including Disfear, The Great Deceiver, Lock Up, The Lurking Fear, Skitsystem, and Nightrage.

In August 2025, it was revealed on At The Gates' Facebook and Instagram pages that Lindberg had been treated for adenoid cystic carcinoma (a form on cancer in the mouth and pallet), which was diagnosed in December 2023. This resulted in him having a big part of the roof of his mouth removed, followed by radiation therapy, and ongoing problems with finding some of the cancer remaining. This was revealed as the reason for the band's continued silence on activity and new album progress.

In that post, Lindberg commented on the new album as follows: "Luckily, we recorded vocals for the demos for the new album before all of this happened. The last version of the vocals, the ones that will end up on the album, were recorded in ONE day, mostly one takes, the DAY before the surgery, just to make sure we HAD the album, so to speak. So the vocals were actually recorded BEFORE the rest of the album... a bit different, but it felt good to have it done.

We have now decided to not wait any longer to release this new album. We had first planned to wait with the release until we knew if/when I would be able to sing again, and we were able to support the release with shows. Now when everything about the future is a bit more unsure it feels good to deliver this album. It is an album that we all are very proud of, and it's the first time in 10 years that Jonas and I have worked together with Anders writing an albums’ worth of music. It is a bit more of a return to the "roots", probably best described as a mix between the two last albums we did with Anders (Slaughter Of The Soul and At War With Reality). Hope you all will enjoy it!"

one of Jeff's pics of their 'waow ' 2008 Hellfest show

I was there too. Absolutely killer set. Pretty sure Hellfest '08 was one of their very first reunion shows, and honestly a big reason I even made the trip that year. At The Gates were huge for me, really shaping so much of my taste in heavy music. Been spinning their whole discography over again these last two days. Gutted by the news, but damn grateful I got to catch that fire live.

According to that "Suicidal Final Slaughter" shirt I bought that day and proudly but sadly wore today, this HF show was the third out of eleven shows that were both reunion and farewell at first (reunion as, as we know, they released new material afterward, and farewell as it was intended/advertised as the tour they didn't make after releasing Slaughter, if I remember correctly - Baz Anderson might be able to correct me on that, as we interviewed Tompa together that day)

So sad..
You can really feel when you read the post from August how happy he was about those demo tapes that they are able to use on the album. It will be extremely special to listen to, almost like he sings from the other side..
A true legend, rest in peace Tompa ❤️
