Shorter than many prog metal tracks.

Ah Trivium, the band that make metalheads look emotionally unstable as they have bounced between loving and hating them over the years. Currently beloved by most thanks to a series of well received albums, this is the first release from the band in nearly a decade that hasn't come in the middle of a global pandemic (gather your rabbit's foot, four-leaf clovers and knock on wood just in case). At a scant 17 minutes spread over three tracks, you might as well give it a go as it won't take up much of your day... oh, and it's actually really good.

After their rather ill-fated co-headline tour with Bullet For My Valentine earlier in the year, it should come as no surprise that Struck Dead recalls the band's earlier work at times, be it the riffs in "Struck Dead" sounding like they could be drawn from The Crusade, or the vocal patterns that could be from Ascendancy. This isn't to say it's purely an exercise in nostalgia; while it draws elements from the band's past, it doesn't merely repeat it, but uses it as a blueprint to draw from, combining the best of both worlds, latter-day technical brilliance with an early-years mindset.

If there is one reason alone for listening to this EP, then it has to be "Six Walls", which is fortunate given it takes up the majority of the running time. From its thrash-indebted verses through its melodic chorus and frenetic groove-laden breakdown, it flows seamlessly between a variety of styles while ensuring each part is equally as attention grabbing as the rest; the harmonic guitar interplay is just *chef's kiss*.

Something has to be the weak point, and on Struck Dead, it's the title track, which is the weaker of the three and one I could give or take, although the other two tracks make up for it and then some. Well produced and performed throughout, this form is something I hope Trivium carry through to their next release (hopefully a full-length next time).

So just over ten minutes of your day? Surely you can spare that and get your ears around this. Trivium sustain their quality streak and long may it continue.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I'm not listening.

I unfotunately wasn't as taken with this one as the previous 3 albums - a slightly underwhelming way to end their Alex Bent era, hoping a new drummer will keep the quality up
