My first surprise was when the first seconds of the opener track begun; "Hymn For Life" fires a Death Metal salvo from the get-go, (harsh vocals was never a part of Misery Inc. music), then clear vocals take the lead as it used to be, but they're different, further inspection on the booklet revealed not one, but two new singers, one handling the harsh vocals and other on the clear ones.
This is truly progression, the band evolved and became different, and I can't be more happy for that. But if you were fan of the "older" Misery Inc. worry not, the crunchy, thick riffs are still there, but the variation they offer between the "Gothic" (not so Gothic anymore I assume) and Death Metal sections spices things up.
The only downpoint is that some "modern" influences have made they way through to the sound of the band, not ever-present but you can definitively sense some Metalcore and even Nu Metal influences here, thus making the music more accessible to wider audiences.
But honestly you can't go wrong with this record, is energetic, pulsating, effervescent, each minute of it!
For those not familiar with the band, this is a good place to start, I bet this record is going to be the delight of many metalheads this year, is good to see young bands evolving and developing, but is even better to see bands exploring new grounds, Misery Inc. have set the pace, the only thing I expect from them is a completely different third record.
