What do you like best black or death?

Its a hard choice but i defently like Death metal the most. Mainly because of growling vocals and the drumming.
But let me hear your opinions.

Definitley Death metal no contest, the drumming in black metal can be just as good sometimes, but 75% of the time black metal has shitty production.Nothing can compare to the sheer brutality of Death metal, the lightning fast high pitched solos,double-bass drums and growling vocals.

Well, although I respect people who likes these genres... them are not made for me =). I just like some of the subgenres and fusions, so from black metal I like melodic/symphonic black metal and from death metal I like technical/progressive death metal... but I don't like that much the pure genre in both cases. Anyway, I'll go with Black Metal, u know, it's more melodic... sometimes death metal can blast ur mind and can make ur ears bleed =)

I like Death metal just because Im familiar with more bands from that genre, however I do like some black metal but Im not too familiar with most BM bands and its really hard to find BM in Israel. I especially like emperor, catamenia, melechesh, immortal and some blackened death like Behemoth and dissection.
Ive been wanting to get into stuff like unlord and melodic BM bands.

but within the last year i have listened to more and more death metal and i can definatly say that that is more my taste now
i definatly listen to more death metal then black metal now

Tough, I would go with Black Metal simply cause i can stand any kind of Black Metal band from Raw BM (with shitty production ) to Atmospheric BM. In Death Metal i cannot stand Brutal Death Metal bands(with few exceptions).
But otherwise its very tough to choose as there are so many dimensions to these two genres for example Orphaned Land in Death Metal and Summoning in Black Metal.
I would say BM > DM for me but mind you, just by an IOTA.

It is a very hard choice but I'll go with "Death metal" simply because I listen to more Death metal than Black metal and a lot of my favorite bands are Death metal and/or some kind of it.

There seems to be a completely split 5/5 fandom of both black and death metallers on MS...I'm so unsure myself because I like both as much as the other...it also has to do with that sub-genre of metal you're coming to in order to like one of the other moreso...I think death metal is easier on a lot of people's ears then black metal if they're coming to the genre from a more melodic standpoint but black metal might be easier on someone coming to the genre from like...hardcore/metalcore or much tamer genres of music that are noisy to begin with...

@Arbaces: I don't know...sometimes black metal can be pretty superficial too...

You might as well make a Progressive Metal vs Power Metal thread in this forum...or a Metalcore vs Hardcore thread...I wonder how long this thread will go on...

Shymphonic Black - Flachebch, Bishop Of Hexen, and many more ... same how melodic but more atmnosferic

Viking/Folk/Pagan - Skyforger, Magog, Windir, its like pure BM but lyric are about paagn warior themes and music can be 2 min till 14 min and synts and melodic stuff can be in middle

Death Metal For me.

While I like some Black Metal, I'm not Especially into it.
The only Black Metal Band I'm Heavy into is Dimmu Borgir,
and another one I'm starting to get into called Ludicra.
Sure I Could name a Bunch More (Bathory, Burzum, Mayhem, Grandpa's Boy, Etc....)
But I just havn't really sat down and listened to a whole lot of it.
Also, Black Metal Album Production is REALLY Bad most of the time,
unles you buy albums from bands considered to be "Sellouts" Such as Dimmu Borgir (Bullshit!)
And lastly, I really don't like the general subject matter of most BM songs,
I strongly disagree with the Burning of Cathedrals, Were as Pagan I may be,
I still have a strong belief in the respect of others religions, because in the Country
that I live in, even though we have "Freedome of religion", it really is more like
"Freedom of christian faith, put everyone else down", because right wing Christian
Conservative Extremists have the high places in this country.
So for me to advocate the destruction of their religious Beliefs would make me
a Hyppocrit.

Death Metal Tends to be more technical, and has an array of Subgenres,
Like it can be Progressive, Jazz or Neo-classical influenced. I enjoy the overall
Sound a lot more. The Blastbeat Drumming, The Incredible solos, Just
Like it more.

But in any case, Their Both good. Stay Metal.

well the reults are the same as in the old thread. and I can't wine about it, as death metal is waay more accesible then bm. this is the curse and bless of black metal: being deeply underground.

I used to like some death metal bands (still listen to Opeth or Pan.Thy.Monium ocasionally) but nowadays, I'm at the point were I can't stand death metal. it has almost no atmosphere whatsoever. it is hard to listen to after a while, and it's not a good music just to listen to. at gigs, it's perfect. but that's different. the stupidity of the lyrics also bothers me. generally I don't care about lyrics, but singing 24/7 about gore and killing ppl is just not what I call entertaining.

black metal is really great once you get to know it. the key element is the atmosphere and the diversity of the music. shure, death metal has it's diversities, but it's minor to black metal's. black metal is also a more mature (sounding) music. Not just blastbeats and solos, but songs, written by musicians, not lumber jacks. I also see black metal did a breakthrough on the lyrics part. I mean more and more bands sing in their mother tongue, wich is just great. English doesn't have the right words sometimes.

about black and death doom bands, well, that's another thing. Funeral doom is basicly death/doom slown down with more focus on the atmosphere and depression.

I agree there is too much gore related lyrics in Death, but mostly do to Cannibal Corpse, wich is over the top and pathetic.

yeah. I sounded like I didn't know nothing about death metal but I do. that's why I don't like it. and I also consider grind to be a subgenre of death metal, or something closely related. and grind is also filled with gore.

True or tr00 ? and Death than, what False ? Maybe i don't understand the meaning of putting the word 'true' , i think it used mostly to show that i like 'this' more than 'that'.

Death. There are a few BM who manage to create great atmosphere and produce to good music. But most of it sounds awful due to poor production and is just ridiculous to begin with.

To say Death Metal has Pathetic Lyrics is not really acurate, Like someone
Above me mentioned (Thanks to Mega-Slayer) Death Metal is Not all gore and
murder, just listen to some songs by, well, by "Death", even though they also
have their Gory songs, they also have spiritual and inteligent lyrics.

Black metal is my choise. Black metal is far more creative, and has much more variety in music. As well as having better bands than in Death metal.
I dont hate death metal, in fact i do enjoy some bands such as Death and Obituary. But After that i find it tends to get very peretative relying solely on being briutally heavy. And its sad, because there is so much tallent in Death metal. It's a genre very short of creativity. Nile and Behemoth are two exceptions to the rule but many would argue they are both BM. I consider them to be Death first with elements of Black.

Well as far as Ive heard though me choosing death metal, I remember not liking BM bands soley because I dont find the same culture of technicality as i do in the black metal Ive heard, dont get me wrong, I like black metal, but I think that the dm Ive heard is more technical than black metal.

Black Metal in my opinion is simply more interesting and can contain a lot more emotion than death metal. There's only a couple of really good death metal albums (Blessed Are the Sick, The Final Holocaust, The Nocturnal Silence etc.), but black metal has far too many great works to be listed. Death metal may have most of the technical ability and music theory knowledge, but BM has so much more to offer to the listener. Too many DM bands focus on being as "br00tal" or as gorey as possible, good black metal has a lot more substance even if it has less double bass. Sometimes I can sit down in the middle of August and put on Immortal's "Pure Holocaust" or Enslaved's "Vikinglgr Veldi" and feel the chills of the North (or Blashyrkh of course ), guiding a Dragonship across the hostile waters as we prepare to pillage an innocent Christian village.

@Invoked,
I personally like Immortal alot, I think the way my taste in music erupts as more of a musical appreciation for musical success, but then again I also appreciate BM because it does offer atmosphere and that is a part of music that a musician also needs to strive to achieve.

Only Black Metal has that unique atmosphere and tone!
In Black Metal not only speed has a meaning but also (the most important) cold, evil sounds which can't be compared to anything else! Black Metal "singing" is much more effective than Death metal buzzing! Black Metal forever!
