Dirt is a cathartic classic and an album that deserves a review of some kind. Haunting harmonies encompass lyrics that depreciate and belittle. Their vocal tones can truly hypnotize the listener. Yes, Alice In Chains waste no time in shoveling the weight of their sound onto you, with "Them Bones", providing a summary of the themes of the album. "I believe them bones are me."

I noticed that most of the metalheads that listen to Grunge preffer Alice In Chains than any other grunge band. Peoples who listen to Rock preffer Pearl Jam than any other grunge band... So... What about Nirvava? They're not the most succesfull band in the scene? And why Stone Temple Pilots isn't featured in MS? STP kick the ass of any other grunge band!

STP were mostly copycats, albeit very enjoyable copycats. I'd take Pearl Jam over all other grunge bands. I'd also say that Soundgarden would be the favourite of metalheads as they're the most metal (hence why they're on here and Nirvana and STP are not).

I agree in this passage.

Ahh, Dirt. One of the most perfect albums ever recorded.

And agreed with the statement that most metalheads prefer Alice In Chains to other grunge bands. AIC has always had not only a much heavier edge, but a visceral aspect that many other grunge bands lacked. That's what we metalheads crave, I'd say.

I've always said that AIC were only lumped in with other grunge bands because of where they came from, rather than their actual sound. This album in particular is far more metal than anything else, the influence of Sabbath on a lot of the riffing is undeniable. The album itself is a caustic, vicious, despairing, but also beautiful masterpiece. Definitely one of my fave albums of all time.

And I agree with the above comment about Soundgarden.

AIC and SOundgarden took their influences from metal whereas Nirvana mostly from punk, same for Mudhoney btw.
Especially AIC's Facelift is almost pure metal more so than Dirt

I think it does sound a lot like other 'grunge' bands at the time, but yeah it was definately a lot more on the metal side, while Nirvana took a lot more punk and sometimes noise influences.
However, to me it does have that kinda wierd vibe to it, that bands like Soundgarden especially shared, espeically in the way the vocals were presented.

It may be predictable to say, but 'Dirt' is a monumental album, not merely of the grunge genre, but of 90's metal itself. So much groove and heaviness is contained within this album it's hard not to bang your head whenever possible. Opening madly enough with 'Them Bones' and closing almost grandiosely with the sensual yet mysterious 'Would?', there isn't a single instance where this album disappoints the listener. Some may get tired of the slower songs midway through the album, but a few more listens and it is certainly worthwhile to see the variation in sound here. Oh, and another thing, i was born in the year that this album was released, significantly on the same date that Layne Staley was born. Coincidence it may be, but Staley was blessed with a beautiful voice, so it seems.

This is all killer, no filler. Remember seeing them live in Sydney when they were touring in support of this album. Great show. And I saw Layne Staley and Mike Inez in Kings Cross later that night and they both signed my tour t-shirt, which was nice of them. Still got it, of course.

An excellent slab of 90s Grunge/Metal! So many awesome songs to choose off of this one (including "Them Bones" which I first heard off of ATV Offroad Fury for the PS2, and was my first exposure to them). Amazing stuff.

Similar as my case, only that I heard it in GTA San Andreas on Radio X.
Didn't know that was AIC until a couple years later, good times.

Yeah, I didn't know the song playing in the background was Alice in Chains until several years later or so, since I was a little kid at the time and wasn't aware enough to know who AiC was. I just remembered how the music sounded and was like "oh yeah! I remember playing to that!".

My case is similar as well. I first heard this song on Guitar Hero 2

The review by Nosurper is worth reading, but yes, I agree with you - are are unlikely to agree with someone who rates the album a 9 or 10.
