So as far as grindcore goes, who do you guys think is the most influential? I think the most influence lies within Repulsion and Siege. Both bands only had one album but were before pretty much every other gridncore band out there (Siege's Drop Dead was released in 1984 and Repulsion's Horrified was recorded in 1986 but released in 1989). My second choices would have to be Carcass and Napalm Death, although both going for death metal later in their career, they were also some of the earliest grindcore bands along with Bolt Thrower. And as for the Electro Hippies, Jeff Walker played bass and sang in this band before Carcass and was an early more hardcore punk band but still had some grindcore elements, which probably led to the grindcore in Carcass' early material. So what do you think?

12.08.2013 - 18:57 Written by Boxcar Willy on 12.08.2013 at 18:47 I would say no doubt it's Repulsion and siege since those two were of immense influence on Napalm Death btw Repulsion were Genocide at the time of influencing ND

12.08.2013 - 19:28 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 12.08.2013 at 18:57 Well Napalm Death has definitely influenced more bands than Repulsion and Siege. Therefor their influence is stronger in my books. A lot of people know about Napalm Death, a few know Repulsion and hardly any know Siege (who were more punk than metal anyway).

12.08.2013 - 19:33 Written by Boxcar Willy on 12.08.2013 at 19:28 where does grindcore come from? Indeed, mainly from punk. Just listen too how extremely punk ND were on the first two albums where they played grindcore before they shifted to generic death metal because that was popular at the time. Only later did they shift back to grindcore again.

And although Napalm Death may have influenced more bands, I would still put my vote on Repulsion or Siege.

I'd say Napalm. With a big, gold star for John Peel, as his fascination with "You Suffer" and their general approach got them on the airwaves and a lot more exposure. Repulsion were an influence on them, undoubtedly, hooray, but Napalm Death helped catapult grind from some kids playing in garages or VFW halls to the next level. (Napalm Family Tree... )

17.08.2013 - 19:25 Written by BitterCOld on 14.08.2013 at 01:46 Yep, I think to call Repulsion a bigger influence on grind than Napalm, is like saying Diamond Head is a bigger influence on thrash than Metallica, seeing as Metallica were hugely influenced by Diamond Head. Oh and yep, John Peel is a legend for his exposure of early extreme metal acts. Bands like Napalm and Carcass definitely owe him a huge debt for where they are today.

18.08.2013 - 15:32 Written by [user id=115824] on 13.08.2013 at 03:25 The title is MOST INFLUENTIAL GRINDCORE BAND, which you say is Napalm No doubt Repulsion, Siege and the like had an influence on the early grindcore scene but it was the likes of napalm and carcass that had the biggest influence after. A toss up between carcass and napalm. I'll give to carcass cause i've more carcass inspired albums (and some blatant rip offs) than napalm.

Napalm were around for years before they recorded "Scum", but I'm unsure as to how long they'd been playing the type of music which is on that album...

I gotta go with Napalm Death for two reasons. One they were early on, granted not the first to play grind by any means, but still early on enough to influence an influx of many grindcore bands. And secondly, because they had more releases than a lot of other bands in the grindcore genre. Again, I will grant they did lean more to death metal in later releases.
