Awesome. I love their Egyptian infused ambiences. Sets them apart from many other bands. They're definitley one of my favourite bands at the moment. I saw them live last Wednesday and they put on an awesome show. Played a lot of stuff from Annihilation Of The Wicked, of course. Karl Sanders gave me a hug afterwards and wanted to take a picture of me. He's a nice man.

You're right. What's great about them is their uniqueness. They're definitely something unusual and special!

Nile are a great band and i must admit i didnt like them the first time i heard them. Annihilation Of The Wicked was a nice album though Black Seeds....is their best album IMO.
Yeah as mentioned the egyptian ambiences seperate them frm the rest and add a something extra which is amazing, but many people also dislike the band due to the same

A really great band. As I posted before, this is the band which appealed to me the most in the extreme metal scene because of the Egyptian touch and atmosphere, and consequently the band which got me into death metal. Now I've discovered other bands but Nile remain unique to me!!
My favourite album would be "In their darkened shrines", even if I really like all their releases. "Annihilation of the wicked" is a bit different, with less Egyptian sound, more technical, but I love it too!!

Nile is probably the greatest death metal band around at the moment, and definitely not without reason. =)

As for their records I think I like Annihilation Of The Wicked best (great songs like Sacrifice Unto Sebek, Cast Down The Heretic, User-Maat-Re, Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten), but I don't think it's really... "Nile", if you know what I mean. It feels like they have drifted off a bit from the original style of music. I'm not going to go into comparing songs, but Annihilation feels a bit off compared to the older records. Or it maybe the better production and sound quality playing tricks on my mind. Or perhaps Kollias awesome drumming. Amongst The Catacombs and Black Seeds have most true Nile-sound, though.

Anyway, it's a great band. I hope they hurry out to their next tour, I missed their gigs here in Sweden. 8|

@Dream_of_Hate: Yes any suggestions/recommendations on any of their material would be helpful(other then In Their Darkened Shrines which I own) just thought I'd clear that up.

Pretty much anything really. Amonst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka is their first album, and has more "Egyptian-Sounding" parts, very brutal as well. Black Seeds Of Vengeance was the same way, with a little less focus on the Egyptian sounds. Their latest album, is more of a straight death metal album. Very heavy and very fast. There are a couple of really good Egyptian-esque insturmentals too.

their recent album, annihilation of the wicked , is by far their most technical album, and is surely not a straight death metal album . amazing drumming by george kollias and some really atmospheric parts take the listener to a totally new world. I'd suggest a person wanting to try out Nile to listen to Annihilation..... for sure.

Nile is pretty good,I bought their album In the Beginning a while ago before listenening to it.It was pretty good sounds a lot different from what they are today but I wasn't disappointed. From what I heard off of Black seeds of Vengeance was better.I think the 6th song on that album is excellent.I remeber for the longest time I didn't like Nile because I saw one video on Tv,but now that i've listened to more,I have gotten to like them.

Maybe, but it was nowhere near as atmospheric as previous efforts....much heavier too.

I am not the only person who notices the heavy use of eastern guitar scales in 'Annihilation of the Wicked' am I? In my opinion, I would rather have those types of instrumental additions make the atmosphere for me than actual sound slips and such. I feel that way it is much more real. I still sense an atmosphere as strong as all of Nile's other albums from their latest effort. Maybe that is just me.

I used to think Nile was the most overrated band on Earth, but Annihilation Of The Wicked made me shut up... it's a Death Metal masterpiece... they finally dared to use a stronger dose of eastern elements.

This is so weird, it seem everyone feels that AOTW is just as atmospheric as their other albums, but I don't. Maybe I'm just not listening or just stupid.

I know where you are coming from. 'Annihilation of the Wicked' is much more straightforward than anything else they have made, but that's where the "brilliance" comes in. It "appears" straightforward, but you have to dig a little deeper, past the wall of noise and find that atmosphere. I'm not saying that you just create it if it isn't there, because it is. They used all kinds of eastern guitar scales. They didn't use as many sounds as usual but they put a reality into their music that was hard to come across in some of their earlier works, I think. You just have to dig a little. That is just me though.

Yes, their earlier albums had a lot more Egyptian sound without their actual instruments (Black Seeds Of Vengeance for instance, which has three songs consisting entirely of set the mood-sounds) but Annihilation Of The Wicked has more Egyptian sounds with their actual instruments, such as the Eastern guitar scales used. This is more evident on Annihilation than on the other records, though Sarcophagus and Ruins from In Their Darkened Shrines uses mainly Eastern-like guitar scales.

the problem of starting with such a good album as Annihilation of the Wicked, is that their older stuff will probably seem extremely weak.
