Dream Theater - Sixteenth Studio Album In The Works

Dream Theater's latest album A View From The Top Of The World was released only six months ago, but they don't plan on slowing down after 15 studio albums in over 30 years. According to keyboardist Jordan Rudess, the band is going to enter the studio after the end of the world tour for A View From The Top Of The World to start recording their next album for a tentative 2023 release.

When asked by VM Music about his future plans, Rudess said: "As a solo artist, I actually have planned some solo concerts for the summer. I'm going to be doing some concerts around North America, so that's really cool. I'm still working out exactly what I want to play, but it'll definitely involve a lot of piano, and some synthesizer. I'm looking forward to that kicking off. At the same time, I'm very involved with technology, as you know. I'm working with some very cool companies these days in developing a new instrument that's going to be shown at the next NAMM show, which is in June. Before my solo tour, that will be the first thing I do. Anyway, it's called the pocket piano. I'm trying to help invent an instrument that I think every keyboardist is going to want to take with them. It's this portable concept, where you have these pieces of a keyboard that snap together. So, you can basically have an eighty-eight note keyboard in your backpack, and then take it out anywhere and have a really great sounding piano. You'll be able to hook it up to something else - whatever you wanna do. As for Dream Theater, after we get back from its last show of the European tour we have a bit of a break. And after I finish my solo shows, Dream Theater will continue on the road with some shows in Japan, South America, and more to be announced as we go. When that settles down, we'll be entering the studio again, and doing a new album, which will be awesome. So, yeah, stuff like that is on the horizon."

Anyone else out there who doesn't like DT? Almost every metalhead I know, either likes or loves them, but I can't stand them no matter how many times I've tried... Is it just me? 😁

Well, they made some fantastic albums throughout its career, this is unquestionable, but now it's clear that they repeat the same formula. They're making albums that are very well performed but lacking of inspiration and creativity. Anyway, DT has a cult status

I certainly don't like what they've become Images And Words and Awake remain among my favorite albums of all time, but I gradually lost all interest in what they're up to after Train Of Thought and even the superbly fond memories I have of those three albums won't turn me back into a fan.

They do sound very repetitive to me, too. The difference is, I never liked them to begin with.

DT is probably the most talented band to ever exist if we're just talking about pure talent from each musician. However, Portnoy was right that the band needed a break and a little bit of a hiatus. I mean, good for them if they want to continue the DT-machine, but the last two albums have been okay. I mean they haven't been bad compared to The Astonishing, but I am a big believer that extra time on an album can make all the difference between a good album and an album that sounds like every other song on their previous album. I think Blind Guardian is a perfect example of spending a good time on each album and caring for it like it's your baby.

I really like Images and Words. I think they perfected their style there. Their other albums though sound like a bad copy of that album in my opinion

Meh. I like a couple albums. Images And Words is definitely great. But I'm too strongly a lover of death metal to be in the mood for DT much of the time. More one of those bands that I appreciate rather than very often enjoy.

They have contracts to honor, they're quite big now, they won a Grammy. I'm not surprised they will release new music next year.

Nope. I've never been able to get into them. Between the vocals and the musicianship. I can respect them without finding them enjoyable. Always gravitated toward heavier and edgier prog anyway. Tool, old Opeth, etc.

Same here. Always seem to prefer the heavier stuff. DM is definitely my go-to

I love prog but not the type DT plays. I need some DM thrown in the mix to make it enjoyable for me

I think they have contracts and deadlines to meet. Bands in the past have been in worse positions, when they did albums because they had to, under pressure from labels, I can name quite a few bands that were in this situation.

Count me in the minority that didn't enjoy their last album. With that said, there are a number of "newer" DT releases that I really enjoy, so I'll hold out hope.

Dream Theater make boring music, but that pocket piano invention has me very intrigued. Many years of hauling around my keyboard makes me wanna play the flute or something.

After a few boring and really unispired records since the departure of Mike Portnoy, they´ve managed to find this new fórmula for the band with "Distance Over Time", which valued a lot the drumming skills of Mike Mangini in the band, the best DT record with him on drums by far. And in my opinion, that was the right path for the band, with shorter and still exciting tracks aswell. But suddenly they decide to return to the old and wasted fórmula, with long and way too boring tracks, launching record after record, not letting the previous record breath just a little bit more with the fans. I think too much is too much...

They need to improve themselves SO MUCH (especially LaBrie, but this case is just a REALLY LOST HOPE, because his vocal performance level is getting WORSE with every new album released) towards creativity and breaking their own mold if they really want to get another epic hit like the ones from the 90's or 2000's. I love so much their entire catalogue, but I agree about they've become too stale and cliched (Distance Over Time, as BlankFile did mention, was a light of hope for the people about those guys, but their last album was really uninspired, though musically magnificent. Man, such a paradox!).
