I know we're only 4 months in the year, but does anyone have any recommendations for this year? Personally, I enjoyed Skrillex's new "album" (even though it may seem surprising since we haven't heard from him since 2015). He just dropped a mixtape for april fool's day and I enjoyed it a lot.

haven't listened much of 2025 releases yet, but was very impressed with Old Forsaken Realm's debut. It's dungeon doom with a more grandiose/triumphant approach. some banger melodies and the last 4 minutes are absolutely epic. going to be one of the best this year.

got around to listen the new Quest Master. at this point it's far removed from dungeonsynth, much closer to synthwave/electro/synthpop or whatever, very upbeat. incredibly enjoyable and satisfying, can see myself returning to this regularly.

My top 5 albums so far are probably:
Richard Dawson: End of the Middle
Ichiko Aoba: Luminescent Creatures
Park Jiha: All Living Things
Alan Sparhawk with Trampled by Turtles - s/t
Natalia Lafourcade: Cancionera

Other 4-stars include Stereolab, Jenny Hval, Amateur Hour, Lou-Adriane Cassidy and Eiko Ishibashi, at least.

So yeah, the debut full-lenght album from the UK based post-punk/jazz act Maruja is my non-metal AOTY. Hands down

It seems that Crippling Alcoholism released a new album too. Damn this was a good week!

Maruja

I came here to suggest this, WHAT AN ALBUM! It has such a unique energy and is perfectly produced.

The Dreadnoughts got a second wind this year with the album "Polka Pit". This time I was not bored for a moment. Definitely one of the best bands in their style.

Re: Maruja, I think Knocknarea was their peak and they've steadily become less interesting. I don't much care for the (post-)punk vibes of the LP.

Really, really looking forward to a new Anna von Hausswolff album in a few weeks. Gonna be close to AOTY material, based on the singles.

Two new favorites in my top 5 since last posting: Junior Brother is some fantastically freaky, dissonant Irish prog folk, and Titanic's second album is even better than the first, experimental post-minimalist cello avant-pop. Mabe Fratti is incapable of making a bad album, apparently:

Posted my year-end list already. Top 5 changed a bit since July, but number one holds onto its spot: https://metalstorm.net/users/list.php?list_id=8873
