Has it been relatively the same genre or all genre's through out, or has it varied through the years ?

What do you think? I started out with Kiss and Scoripins and such back in 1979 and am currently listening to SOlothus on the stereo, just compare them to the first two bands

Might as well say i have been listening to metal for 18 years, started listening to NOFX and the Misfits at 12 and now am listening to things Gris and Trist.
Be solid if anyone on here had been purely dedicated to the black metal scene or something for a straight 20 years.

NOFX and the Misfits were punk whereas Kiss and Scorpions were metal at the time, even though people call them hard rock now. And they are more related to current day metal than NOFX, Misfits and such. People in metal only started listening to Misfits due to Metallica wearing their shirts and later on covering them. Btw also listened to motorhead back in 1979 and Saxon and a year later of course Iron Maiden when their debut album was released.

i was just using a metaphor of how different kiss and scorpions are to what you listen to now, i am aware misfits ans nofx are not metal

Sorry for misunderstanding you, I thought you wanted to say Kiss and Scorpions ahd nothing to do with metal But yes, it is totally diferent from what I listen to now even though I do listen to pre-1980 Scorpions quite a lot and Kiss only some live stuff nowadays.

Hm... somewhere between 5 and 6 years, though the first year some people would question me about (most of) the bands being metal But I find it pretty amusing(and somewhat cool) that some of the first bands that I listened to all the way back then were Bloodbath and Daath.

I started with rock actually: Rick Springfield, Alice Cooper, Billy Squier, Van Halen, Black Sabbath (this is metal), etc. Late 70's.
80's with NWOBHM, thrash golden days, very little death metal (Death, Obituary), crossover...
90's with grunge, nu metal, rap metal.
00's with...... umm.......... well, several metal sub-genres.... not quite a fan of extreme/noise metal, though; I'm more into the melodic type of metal.
Currently I still listen to all these types of rock / metal, except the early ones (Springfield, Squier, Cooper). But I'm always open to hear new stuff.

I have been listening since I was a freshman in high school. Anddd....... now I am a junior. xD Yea not too impressive. Regardless I started with Wintersun, which led to Ensiferum, which led to Amon Amarth, which led to Dark Tranquillity and many other bands. Then a few months ago I found Caladan Brood, which brought me into the black metal scene. From Caladan Brood of course I found Summoning, then Agalloch, and now tons of tiny little underground atmospheric black metal bands haha.

About 9 years when i was a young teen. Was first introduced into Rock/hard rock/blues by my Dad which he always had Uriah heep/Black sabbath/Cream/Led zepplin playing in the background.

Out of those I was drawn to Black sabbath for their "unique, heavy doomy" sound that none other bands tried to do in the early 70's.

From there the rest is history

I know the exact date I started liking metal, due to the fact the first time I remember hearing metal and liking it, was hearing "Can I Play With Madness" on the UK Top 40 chart show, which was on every Sunday here in the UK. That song was a new entry (at number 4) into the top 40, on the 26th of March in 1988. So that was the exact date I became a metal fan.

Exactly after 2 years, i popped up in the world.

My sober date of getting into metal was on 26th March 2000 when my dad handed me over Black Sabbath's Paranoid.

Am I the only one who thinks the title is about getting an erection from music?

10 years roughly. That's counting it as an active genre I purchase from rather than just the first time I heard a bit of metal.

10 years. Before that, I listened to strictly classical music or Christian music as a teenager, I always hated the shallowness and lack of creativity of pop music.

Watched "The Phantom of the Opera," liked the song, torrented it, found Nightwish's cover. Thought it was a fluke something so beautiful could exist on this earth. Found Therion's "Carmina Burana," fell in love with metal.

Now I listen to every kind of metal, but I need symphonic to continue breathing.

I've listened to Metal my whole life, grew up listening to stuff like Sabbath, Maiden and such (my uncle was a huge fan and my dad was always into Dire Straits, Led Zeppelin while my mom was more into Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Beatles).

I've went deep into it 13/14 years ago after discovering Artillery and going deeper into underground Thrash. kind of spreaded from there
