Like others I had parents who listened to heavy metal when I was growing up. But aside from that I've been a metalhead for over 16 years.

Damn, that is longer than most people are old on this site
only 33 here... yet we're the same age.
hey, I must have been a late developer..

First gig was Manowar (loincloths 'n' all), Bristol Colston Hall in March 1983, on the 'Hail to England' tour. Tickets were £3.75, 300 in the audience, Mercyful Fate never showed, but my hearing still got seriously trashed..

Well, in between radio stations on GTA (funny, back then I preferred the 80s stuff on V-Rock but these days I'm more likely to listen to the 90s alt stuff from Radio X), and the first few Guitar Heroes, I got gradual introduction to hard rock/metal through my early/mid-teens, plus I was listening to Linkin Park and Guns N' Roses around that period, along with a handful of other musicians (wasn't really that into music during that period). My first real acquisition of metal stuff was January '08, when I picked up ...And Justice For All and Dragonforce's Inhuman Rampage off the back of Guitar Hero III. Slowly during that year I picked up additional songs from established artists here and there, before getting a load of Metallica CDs and Megadeth and Black Sabbath Greatest Hits albums for Christmas 08. My collection then slowly built up over the next year and a half before exploding over Summer 2010, from which point it's shot out into all different directions.
So I suppose I lightly flirted with the whole area of music between around 2003 to 2008, and then really got into it all from 2009 onwards, so around 6 years. And I have video games to thank for it all!

Haha I'm sorry my brain decoded "years" instead of "days". It's my fault this time .

I started in 2000 at the age of 9 .. My first band was Iron Maiden.. They are my all time fav band.. Saw them live about 10 times now.. Then I started to listen Metallica,Slayer, Kreator, Destruction and got more in more in thrash metal.. At first I didn't like black or death metal but later I started to listen practically ever sub-genre of metal.. Immortal and Darkthrone got me in black metal.. Cannibal Corpse,Nile,Deicide,Suffocation got me in death metal.. This year is 15 years since I first heard Iron Maiden.. Metal has become important factor in my life over these 15 years.. I became a concert freak over the years.. Saw all my fav live numerous times.. I only have to visit Wacken some day..

The first metal album I ever heard was Carnage's Dark Recollections on cassette back in 2000 but wasn't really much of a metal head. Then I discovered Nightiwsh in 2001 and the whole mix of heavy metal and operatic vocals just amazed me. From Nightwish I got in a whole bunch of different stuff from Sentenced to Wintersun to Arch Enemy and Iron Maiden. It was only 2 years ago that I truly began to appreciate Dark Recollections again

Consistently since 2000. So 15 years. I think I always had a proclivity for if though. My mother told me I was watching the Muppet Show as a tike and when Alice Cooper came on I was glued.

Newby alert!!! Hello all.
Roughly 30 years or thereabouts. At that time AC/DC were considered metal and were my first 'heavy' band. Before that I was (and still am of their pre-80's albums) a major Queen fan. Maiden were probably the first actual metal band I heard.

I'm 21 now, and I started in my last year of high school when I was 18. So, three years, now! For me it all started when I was introduced to Rob Zombie (I used to think he was the best thing at the time...lol). After that, started working my way into other bands and sub-genres in what I can only call a massive exercise in open-mindedness.
I dived completely head-first into a type of music I had never even considered until that point lol. No regrets so far.

I don't see myself not listening metal for now, so don't worry.
