School education - another form of manipulation?

I mean the education what we recieve in schools. What do you think? IMO education is manipulation, cuz we learn what the government tells us, and the simple fact that sometimes history books are different in countries, makes you think, or not?

Education is necessary for the essentials, say, learning how to talk, etc and even more advanced education such as web design (hell, this website wouldn't exist if it weren't for education - one of the few benefits from true education), but other topics are purely manipulation a la the most blatantly obvious ones - religion and history.

Hopefully, either one day, the world will undergo a mass revolution, blow up and teach the blind (not the literal blind people, the ingorant) a lesson, or people just realise an progress into professing what the actual truth is in terms of certain topics...

Yeah it's 100% manipulation. I go to a catholic school and the way they teach is totally manipulating, and there is no way you can disagree, if you disagree then they will punish you. When school starts again i am going to wear a T-shirt of To Mega Therion, just for the fuck.

Damn, I didn't knew there are still catholic schools. But I can imagine the inqusition you take place, day by day

Education could be a form of manipulation, especially when it forces us to have a special opinion. Just recently some guys here in Sweden failed in civics in their school because they were nazis, the principal of the school said that if they were nazis they did not understand what the whole civics subject was about. I don't say that I agree with their opinions but I disagree with the school, cuz you shouldn't fail in a school subject just because you have a special opinon about things. Does that mean that I will fail in the religion subject just because I don't belive in God?

I think that in some way, school education can be a form of manipulation, I odn't remember some time when teachers forced me to believe in something or have a certain opinion about an issue.
But I think that other point similar to this one is that in school, they teach you many things without explaning you the reason, the usefullness in the life, etc. for example: mathematics, biology, chemistry...

Yes, I agree, the thing is similar. And I really hate then you learn such abstract stuff:, that you'll never use in your daily life. So when you end school, you know a lot, or so you think.

It may be true that you finish the school knowing lots of things but the majority of the times, you forget that stuff very easy and quick. and the abstract stuff many times can be really useful in real life but the teachers never tell you that, so, you study just for an exam, without knowing the most important reason of learning this stuff

I think the case is much less to do with manipulation as it is... well over-education, to the point where you believe everything you are told, and you loose all initiative to find things out for yourself.

Wow! great point man, I didn't think that before and it's completly true and not only that, the education is in many cases really boring, because you don't make something creative, let's take the example of mathematics or physics: you learn only theory but you don't see almost any example in real life, thus you lose interest in the issue

I know in australia, it is a wide centiment that the US is the biggest example of this... Its a country where the people are manipulated by paranoia, and fear. Through a lack of interest in what the problem is all about.

We learn a lot of stuff in school (most of it doesn't matter) , but it's important anyway. Being locked 6 hours a day in a classroom doesn't help, and if we our teacher doesn't come, there is another teacher to replace him/her, which makes us look like freaks in a mad-house (in this case in a classroom )...So yes, i think we are being manipulated, and someday i think that we are going to have mental disturbs.

thanx for moving this

anyways, i just wanted to point out another thing. the holocaust. i don't have a problem that we learn about it or anything. but my problem is, that we don't learn about the gulag. does any of you even know what it is? i doubt it... i really hate that we learn that hitler was the most evil man alive, that he killed over 10 million ppl. stalin killed over 50 million, but noone talks about that. noone bans the red star, because everyone thinks it's ok to be a communist, but it's not ok to be a nazi! why? because our teachers don't tell us what the big picture is, they just show us a fragment. and many don't bother searching things up.

the same thing is availabe in the case of religion. atleast here in E europe. we learn that chrisitan mythology is real, and others (norse, greek, mesopothamian etcetera) are fictions, made up by people who could not explain certain things (why are we here, where did we came from etcetera). ppl laugh when they hear about sumerain genesis myths, but they have no problem believing the judeo-christian one.

it's the same with jesus. they don't tell us that, even if he existed, he was just a man. and there were more like him. duzens. they don't teach us that christianity has almost nothing original in it, that starting from divinity of jesus, to the last super everything is stolen from other religions. and we learn about jesus in almost every class. why is that?

again: education is manipulation.

I've never thought about that But i think you're absolutely right .I think that they talk more about hitler because he wanted to exterminate the judes. And, if i'm not mistaken stalin didn't want to exterminate nothing, just kill....Anyway, stalin killed more than hitler, and you are right, they should point stalin as the most evil man, not hitler (evil man too), although they were two bastards...

stalin wanted to exterminate the ukranians, he hated them very much. he took away their entire crop gain (the ukranian lands were famous for producing high quality wheat) ppl were killed if they tried to 'steal' a minimal quantity of wheat to make bread. about 11 million ukranians died, but until this day the russians deny that this was a genocide.

look up Holodomor in wikipedia for more

Thanks for the information I didn't know that. Now i'm thinking: "School is for what?" ...Honestly they should teach more things that matter to us, instead of studying always the same damn thing...

That information is quite interesting, well, I think that many times, teachers don't know how to give good classes, and maybe schools hide information, though it deppens on the country too, imo

But the fault isn't only of the teachers, the govermnents has fault too...The teachers don't select what they have to teach to students. The ministry of education is the principal responsible for the failures in education, but hey, i'm not saying that it's only responsible...

If it is a form of manipulation I certainly do not blame the teachers here in Sweden. I don't know how it is in other countries but here the teachers kinda becomes your friend and wants you and egourages you to have your own opinions.

Here in Colombia it happens too (really often, if it's not never) it's never happened to me, but I know some cases and I'm sure that with this people get interested in education.
Another important thing is that proffesors many times 'feel superior' to students and that really sucks

I definitely think that school education is a form of manipulation to a certain extent. Although, in many circumstances, it's not the teachers nor the school that are to blame. The government decides the course structures in school and what the students are to be taught. When it comes to subjects like history and religion that can be highly controversial, teachers also tend to be quite subjective. In Australia, thankfully it is illegal to teach religion in state schools.

Now, the reason why I had stated that I don't always blame the teachers for the manipulation in schools is that even the text books the students are required to have, some of the information is highly controversial and not always necessarily true. Now what is worse is when you disagree with something and the teacher tries to force it down your throat. There's been a number of times that I have been in a situation where I or other students have disagreed with a teachers opinion and he/she has abused us and made us feel as though we had done something wrong. I mean, what ever happened to a bit of freedom of speech? Or for the matter, the liberty to think freely?

Education is an important part of our lives, but the form of education is schools is horrible. A lot of the school text books are extremely biased and the course structures of subjects are terrible. Just another technique to brainwash children.

sigh... if that's about as deep as your disagreement gets, no wonder they have little patience for it. I'm curious thought, how exactly do you get punished?

On a more general note, what's this whole thing with history being a biased, despicable mind control tool? Last time I heard it actually served as a guarantee against manipulation, by providing us with past examples of it, among oter things. And, as far as I know, histoy books, at least in non ideollogically restrictive coutries, pretty much all tell you the same story, more or less. Differences are more likely to be the result of uncertainities (sometimes there's just no way to ultimately determine how did things go), misinformation, or different wiewpoints by historians (again, the existance of different theories is guarantee of free and unrestricted research and is a trait common to all sciences), rather than an attempt by the 3v1l oppressive powers to twist our minds...
This is just another manifestation of the dreary, conspiracy obsessed mentality prominent among the youth (and not just the youth) these days, and I gotta say that metalheads are particularily prone to this form of self-victimism. But I'm getting carried away here.

Do you really want to know what bias did we inherit from the past generation? Rebellion. We've been raised to have no faith in society and to use it as a fantomatic, evanescent scapegoat to avoid taking responsibility for our lives...
The mechanical rantings of today's youth are, for the most part, just the watered down, decontextualized reflection of the 60ies counterculture.

That isn't to say our education system and society in general is perfect or even anywhere near good, because it ain't, and theres just so much to change and improve. Our fathers got us this far, if we want to carry on the torch the first step might very well be shrugging this childish mentality off...

Ofcourse school if a fucking way to manipulate kids. Let me give an example
Who invented the airplane?
if you are american your gonna say the Wright brothers, because thats what they thaught you
however if you are brazillian or french, or from other part of europe you are probably gonna think about Santos Drumont (sorry but I cant spell his last name) as the inventor.

Schools in Cuba for example will teach you good things about Fidel Castro, no wonder why he has such a big support from the population (duh he is brainwashing his people) same thing occours in about everywhere else.

In the US, they teach you that they just left the vietnam war, however without saying that they lost it. But in brazil for exemple they teach you that the US lost the war.

Also something that I never liked about school is the fact that in many ocasions you are somehow oppresed by expressing your opnion because it goes against what they or the government belives in. Also manytimes while I was in school I have been "censured" because I was exprecing my creativity and it happened to go against the belive of some/most people.

I agree with you on that, especially.
It's funny,
last year we were forced to watch Al Gore's An Inconveniant Truth,
and then write a report on what we thought of the movie, what we are going to do to help stop global warming,
and then we had to make some Letter to Al Gore, (which wouldn't actually get SENT to him) about the things discussed in his documentry.
Well,
I got home and started to think what the fuck I was going to say about this movie,
which by the way is so fucking biast in everyway.
It's pretty much telling everyone ONE side of it,
and brainwashing them into beleiving that is the only truth.
So, I did a little re-search and found out a few things.
Like how every school in BC at least was expected to have the movie shown to them.
I started writing.
When I was done,
I had a three page essay on how much of an idiot Al Gore is and how stupid more than half the population is for beleiving all that shit.

By the end of it, I got an F on the assignment,
and had a one week in-school suspension.

All, like you said,
for expressing my opinion.

School is worthless. The only education that matters is self education. If a person isn't willing to educate himself, he will still wind up as an idiot no matter how hard the system tries to keep him in an academic playground. In addition, the truly curious often times have their curiousity beat out them because of mandatory education. Making education mandatory takes all of the beauty away from learning.

Also, most teachers suck. Plain and simple.

We really need more private education alternatives.

I think everybody who's against "system education" is misunderstanding the real meaning of the word, I mean, the education is given in home, the instruction and learning is given in schools, so take it easy, you can't learn all by yourself, there's always somebody, older or younger by a chronological accident, that had teach you something even if you want it or not... and if you think school is worthless, I just can wonder that you are frustrated... there's always good teachers, the only thing you should do is search 'em, don't stay just there waiting for 'em to come and teach you all they know 'cause is your right, you have to move too...

It depends where are you're, and which school you're studing.

Many countries has your "education rules", against what school you are studing, it has many schools have a lot of ways of teaching like (catholic / prostestant, or others philosophies / methodology), and this type of school will focus on your philosophic thread, ofcourse that they gonna teach the educational issues imposed through country / state.

And certily that makes / put some way of thinking about something. And is basic for you learn somethin. did you think how you are writing that issues on this post? and puting part of you thinking on this wall?!?!?!?!?!

Ps: a lot of schools around the world are suppoted by Governament's resources, and they will have a polilateral way of think!!!!!!
