Checked Alcest wikipedia yesterday, and Neige stated that he took 5-7 years to complete this stuff,

Yes, I agree with what you said entirely. I still think they shouldnt be in first place because as far as I'm concerned "Fiction" and "Paradise Lost" are better. But they are all different bands in the end and they are metal bands and Alcest if of a different kind. So, we actually agreed in the end.
Yes, and that's eventually a good thing.

it is a beautiful album. i thoroughly enjoy it. for some reason it just leaves me feeling positive and hopeful. not an overwhelming joy, but like seeing the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel.

Its an incredible album. I just got it after reading the review, its just amazing, its so different then whats out there today. Best comparison i can come up with, this is Weakling...but with clean vocals. Very good, probably album of the year.

weakling? of "dead as dreams" fame? alcest?
i'm sorry, but there is about almost nothing in common between the two. Weakling is fucking ugly, depressing, and harsh, whereas this Alcest release is beautiful and, well, downright hopeful.

I find weakling music inspiring and beautiful. You don't have to agree, depends how you define beautiful.

Neige aint a woman, the vocalist in the song Le Secret is though.
I'm under the impression that the whole Le Secret EP had vocals solely from Neige, the only female vocals were on the song Sur l'autre rive je t'attendrai from this album.

as I remember it, the woman was also in the first Le Secret song but very faint and in the background. could have been neige too though

I absolutely love this album... it makes me feel complete bliss everytime i listen to it. perfect to fall asleep to and enter a dreamworld.
I read somewhere that, despite alot of misinformation going around. Neige does do all the vocals on this album..
I think this album is shoegaze by definition but something about it still feels innately black metal to me. Can't wait for the next part even if it could be 5 years away.

i've been listening to this album lately, and i love it. The perfect middlepoint between Shoegaze and Metal, and since i really like both genres, this is my cup of tea.

A fuckin great album indeed... It actually gives me the impression of a mixture of Fleurety ('min tid skal komme', which are more obvious on their 'le secret' release) and Agalloch..... Well they're actually brilliant and this is definatelly a trully great album worth buying...
Guys, it's just shoegaze with black metal distortion. Why is everyone trying to express how unique it is or to describe its sound? Has anyone ever heard of Slowdive?
I'm not saying it isn't a masterpiece. I love it. However, this isn't anything new for the world of music.

A whole bunch of people rave about how this album is the best thing since orgasm-inducing cookies, but I was bored out of my mind when I listened to it. For me, it never went anywhere and it didn't do anything exciting. Now don't get me wrong, I love depressive black metal (I know this album isn't depressive black metal, but stick with me) with its slow tempos and its thick, enveloping melodies, but this album seems to rub me in the completely wrong way, like petting a cat backwards.

Seeing as this album pretty much runs directly counter to depressive black metal in that it is warm, hopeful, and uplifting, it's not at all shocking that it seems "backwards" to you.
to me it seems backwards that you would use depressive black metal as a starting point for a basis of comparison. would you use a thoroughly depressing movie like "Burnt by the Sun" or "Leaving Las Vegas" as a starting point of comparison against one of those feel-good happy ending dramas like "Blind Side"?

"Leaving Las Vegas"
OKay am I really the only one on this earth who finds nothing depressing about this film? And who finds Cage's character totally unbelievable?
Back to Alcest. I find it utterly boring and meandering as well. But then again I have that problem with ALL of Neige's recordings.

amusingly have never seen it. don't like Cage. i cited it based on what i knew of the plot (dude goes to Vegas to drink himself to death), the fact it showed up on several "horribly depressing movie" lists, and the fact it was far more recognizable than "Burnt by the Sun" (although maybe not to our Russian posters)...
you and hymn can dislike the album, it's your prerogative of course, i was just remarking on the seemingly odd coupling of this Alcest with something like Shining for a comparison.

Oops, you're right. Didn't read your post well enough apparently. I hope Syk won't scorn me for that
His coupling of Alcest to depressive black metal is indeed very weird. He says so, but doesn't go on to explain why he did so in the first place.
