The topic you had all been waiting for. First recommendation, the album Spectrum by the band Am I In Trouble? (weird choice for band name, I know). It is progressive, avant-garde, and, at times, black. Early year highlight for me.

A mix of heavy, doom, and black, something like modern Darkthrone covering Mercyful Fate. Great guitar work and cool songs; the vocals sometimes could be better.

In my opinion, a strong contender for death metal album of the year. Right now, I have it battling with the new Jade for my top spot of the genre.

Cool. I didn't realise Jade a new one out so soon. It's been a while since I spun it, but I'm a big fan of their last.

Oops. I must have been a bit over zealous with the message editing.

You should definitely check out Jade though if you haven't already. I reckon you'll immediately hear some similarities with Sulphur Aeon.

Apparently this young dude from Dunfermline has multiple projects and I've heard the rest are as good as this one.

This one's all about those drowning under water vocals man, but I love the groovy Gothenburgesque guitars too.

An album heavily inspired by the work of Agalloch. Pretty good debut!

As far as OSDM revivalist stuff goes, I'm finding this substantially more engaging than most of the competition - nice hooky/melodic touches in certain songs

I intended to have this featured in the Clandestine Cuts, but they got signed to Journey's End Records for a vinyl release. Traditional doom metal, close in sound and theme to The Temple (GRE).

For fans of heavy metal mixed with some doom vibes, Dungeons & Dragons and John Yelland (Judicator). Came across this by sheer coincidence. Immediately recognized John's vocals and found out this is a side project of his.

Also features a track (Eyes Of The Deep) with Tomi Joutsen from Amorphis. I'd say John is using his lower range a lot more (as well as a slightly more gritty approach) on this record than on any of the Judicator albums, which makes this quite an interesting listen.

Polish post-punk/darkwave. The album was mixed/mastered by Nihil of Furia and judging by the vocals it features a member of Kły.

Not sure I'll find to review this one so sharing it here - Vaneno - Chaos, Hostility, Murder; sludge very much in the High On Fire (and also Horndal) mould:

Split Chain, the UK based post-hardcore group with some Deftones influences are releasing their debut album on July 11th. That’s not a paid advertisement, I like em.

Now something for the adult man. Polish death metal act Clairvoyance is releasing a debut album this year. Great old-school shit with the artwork by the master Paolo Girardi himself. Pre-ordered!

Thrash metal from Turkey – uncompromising, groovy, and full of rage.

MG3 is a groove/thrash metal band from Turkey that blends modern aggression with classic riffing. Their new EP "Demirnefer" is a marching metal behemoth with thundering drums, slicing guitars, and lyrics about resistance and perseverance.

For fans of: Sepultura, Lamb of God, Gojira, Kreator, Megadeth, Destruction.

Quite enjoy this - bit rough around the edges compositionally, but follows the Cascadian black metal approach pretty nicely, between the atmo-black epics and the long neofolk middle track:

This is also some fantastic dissodeath/black, but should be reviewing it as long as I find time for it:

Cheers for this rec, just gave it a listen and enjoyed it quite a bit! (aside from the closing song, that one didn't quite do it for me)

This band Dolven make some really good acoustic doom. Hard to say it’s metal, it has all the characteristics and “ heaviness” of doom but it’s done entirely on acoustic guitar. If you like some folk in your doom, or rather doom in your folk, check it!
