Depends what counts as metal around here -if System of a Down and Disturbed count, then it's been about 5/6 years. Had a little help from my brother with those bands at the start, but then had to get into everything else myself, coz he turned to techno sh*t. >_<

Since September 1984, when I heard "Creeping Death", which is over 27 years now.
I do recall listening to some Iron Maiden before that ("Flight of Icarus"), but I wasn't even aware that it was a genre called metal

The first time I can recall hearing any metal, was the intro riff of Iron Maiden's "Phantom Of The Opera" which was used in an advert for Lucozade featuring Daley Thompson. Although at that time, I knew nothing about metal, so had no idea it was Maiden doing the music as I hadn't even heard of them! It wasn't until years later, when I heard the song proper for the first time on "Live After Death" that it hit me. I was like, "Woah, it's the music from the Daley Thompson ad!

Since 1998, I think. That's when I was introduced to Metallica. By now I've forgotten more bands than I can remember. Which isn't too bad, at least it'll all sound new in another ten years or so

I have been listening to Metal since I was 12.... My first Metal show was a Morbid Angel/Pantera show, didn't know what I was getting into, left with a black eye and a contact high from all the peeps smoking in the crowd. I've been a Metal Head Ever Sense...

I started listening to metal back in 1990. Then for some reason I stopped around 1992 and got back into in 1994-95.

Its not bullshit. I was the same age when my dad took me to a Napalm Death show. Never too young.

I thought they were calling it metal because the snare would sort of sound like a steel drum when struck hard... which is the usual playing style for this genre... True.. I was very firm in this view.I Fucking believed it 100%. Until i read all that etymology shit in wikipedia...

1 year.
Beastie amused me.
Anyway, I was a thirteen year old rocker kid turned metalhead upon starting to appreciate Black Sabbath, then Iron Maiden a bit afterwards. Gave me a shitload of confidence, a chance to get out of ugly clothes and a whole new world to be immersed in and discover.

Since my first year of middle school. First two songs were Iron Man by Black Sabbath and Highway To Hell by AC/DC. Just sat there on my computer, playing them over and over and over and over.

I guess I started in 2002 but that was with nu metal and I didn't really consider myself a metal head nor a music fan overall. My first band then was korns "falling away from me". I was also listening to what people in school were listening too which was mostly rap and hip hop but I never really got into them.
I got into metal around 2007 when I heard cradle of filths "her ghost in the fog" and from there I stared digging deeper into metal and I pretty much just listen to whatever sounds good in my ears which happens to be metal.
