Well, instead of limiting our football talk to just the American Metalstormers thread, I decided to just make a topic about it so that everyone can be included.

My favorite football team is the Seahawks and my favorite player is either Lofa Tatupu or Ken Hamlin. My team got bitch slapped by the Bears recently, but we did suffer from significant injuries.

Anyways, who's your favorite team and player?

Who do you guys see going to the Superbowl this year? It's kinda hard to predict because if a key player gets an injury, the team is basically screwed. I think the Colts have a good chance of finally making it, and will either play the Seahawks or the Bears. I doubt that the Steelers will repeat this year because they haven't looked all that great. Well, I can only hope.

I'm going to make the call and say that Green Bay will beat New England.

Is anyone else sick of the Colts?

Sorry about that first one. Well, not really.

As for the Colts, yes, I am sick to fucking death of them. Story is the same. The run up a bunch of wins during the regular season. Play a tough team in the playoffs and collapse.

FFS, the NFL changed the rules two years ago to hand the Colts and supermarketable star Peyton the title and they still can't get past the Pats or Steelers when it really counts.

As a Pats fan, there are foes I dislike but respect, and foes I hate.

I can respect the Steelers - they play(ed) tough, hard nosed football outside in the cold. I don't like them, but I was rooting for them once my Pats were out last year.

The Colts represent the epitome of what I don't like. Flashy, overhyped, and weak.

They'll likely have homefield throughout the playoffs, but I don't see them advancing with that run defense of theirs. All it will take is a team with a hard-hitting d (Ravens, Bolts when they get everyone back) and a punishing run game to knock them out. Again.

Peyton might have a bunch of records, MVP trophies, and money from TV commercials, but he still hasn't won a fucking thing when it counts. Not at Tennessee (Florida, anyone?). Not in Indy.

@Dream - It wouldn't matter, because New Orleans and Carolina play each other again, at the end of the season.

@Bitter Cold - Give Dungy some time to work with his team. It's not their fault that they win so many games in the regular season. I bet they are a lot better in the playoffs this year, because they are more experienced with winning close games. How can you say they're overhyped...they're fucking 9-1. Do you think any team that wins 9 straight isn't going to be hyped up? Also, I don't think they are very flashy...I'd say they are pretty damn low key. The only thing that I will agree with you on is that their defense is weak. Face it, you hate them because you're a fucking Patriots fan. When the season is over and they lose in the playoffs, come yell at me.

They are flashy in the sense that the Rams were a couple years ago - they have a potent offense, but it's not 'strong' offense. They will put up points, but they cannot punish a defense in the physical sense, like the Steelers did last year, the Pats with Corey Dillon healthy in '04 did ... or the Ravens with Jamal Lewis back in '00.

And as far as "winning close games" - you can say that's a good thing, but I don't think it is. Not when a lot of those games shouldn't be close.

I don't think it will really have an impact in the playoffs.

They were in the same situation last weekend - a tight game late - and they were unable to get the job done. The playoff games will be a lot more like the game in Dallas last weekend than most of hte games they've played this season.

When I look at the other teams in the AFC that will likely be in the playoffs, I see a several that will play to the Colts weaknesses. San Diego and Baltimore really jump to mind. A punishing defense (like the Pats had 2001-2004, before every DB and LB on the roster seemed to get hurt) , especially running a 3-4 will slow down that offense.

And a player like LT will keep Peyton off the field and that Colt defense dog tired.

By winning close games, I meant that it was a good thing for the team, but that they are good because they win close games. Obviously, if a team blew everyone out they would be better than a team who had close games with everyone...but if I was the owner of a team such as the Colts, I'd rather see them win close games in the regular season so they could work on making important split-second decisions. So, the close games the Colts are winning are good practice for them. In the end, it doesn't really matter because a win is a win.

Baltimore is potentially the most dangerous team in the AFC. I am a firm believer that Defense wins championships. The season the Balt. won their last superbowl...they won 4 or 5 games straight without even scoring a touchdown...that's scary. LT is definitely a dangerous weapon...but what's more dangerous is a quarterback like McNair AND a good defense. I still think it's the year of the Colts...and wouldn't mind seeing them win...but I'm not so sure if I'd bet on them just yet.

In the past 3 or so games, it almost seems like he throws more interceptions than completed passes.

I think his motorcycle accident fucked him up more than everyone thought. I think Batch should take over this year because he did alright in Worthlessberger's absence. Wait....no...scratch that. I enjoy seeing him throw interceptions so I hope he stays.

@Konrad- no, I don't bet. I hate losing money too much.

The announcer for the Steelers/Ravens game said that Worthlessberger is going to have purple nightmare tonight because he got sacked 9 fucking times. That game was so fun for me to watch.

oh, and Chad Johnson set an NFL record for most receiving yards in 3 consecutive games with around 550 yards.

I just found out that Derrick Mason of the Ravens is the 4th best receiver since 2001 stats-wise. He is 4th in receptions and 5th in yards gained. That dude is like a fart- silent but deadly.

Well the Bears lost. I am not as torn up as I should be, but it happened. From this point on though, Grossman needs to be kicked. Our quarterback issues have yet to be resolved.

The Steelers got shut out - always a good thing.
Happy to see the Saints kick some ass.
And what the hell happened to the Giants?

I hate snow. I'm just glad Seattle won in weather conditions that Green Bay is used to. I'm also happy that Alexander finally had a breakout game.

Here is my updated shit list:

1. Worthlessberger (reeks of gayness)
2. Tom Ashworth (can't block)
3. Jerramy Stevens (can't catch)
4. Vick (flipping off the home crowd is fucking amazing. wow...never thought I'd see that)
5. Eli Manning (lil' bitch)

Anyone watch the Thursday night game between the Ravens and the Bengals? I was only able to watch a minute or two of it, but I know that the Bengals shut out the Ravens for most of the game, but it ended 13-7. Rudi Johnson didn't do much for the Bengals- he only rushed for 40-something yards. I was surprised at the Ravens win, though. I guess the Bengals finally decided to play consistantly.

I watched the highlights this morning on Sportscenter...I forget that there are Thursday games on now. Palmer and Johnson both looked amazing. They also had a very interesting statistic on ESPN about the Ravens. Until this game...they went seven quarters without having a point scored against them. That's more frightening than the 2000 team. Although they lost last night, and I think the Colts are definitely due for a Super Bowl win...the Ravens are still my strong runner up for the AFC champion this year. Call me an advocate of good defense I guess...

Here are my picks for this week... I'm going to start off and honestly say that I would have picked the Ravens over the Bengals...so I'll give myself a handicap of -1.

Kansas city is playing better and better, and the Browns suck. I'll go with the CHIEFS.

While this game could go either way, I'm going to pick the DIRTY BIRDS because they rrreealllly need the win. I can't say I'm going to be too upset if they lose though.

Definitely going with the CHARGERS over Buffalo. LT is just too hot right now, and he has already proven he can win games against better teams on his own.

CHICAGO can't afford to lose to the Vikings if they want to clinch home field advantage. Since I'm predicting they will win home field advantage, I'm going with them. Grossman will probably also play like shit.

The only Jets game I've seen this year is against the Patriots...so I know the level of physical football they can play. With that game in mind, and also looking at the way Favre played against the Seahawks, I'm going to go with the Jets.

I'm predicting the COLTS won't lose another game until they clinch the conference...but VY is playing well so it should be a fun, high-scoring game to watch.

The real question isn't about the Lions and the Patriots...it's can the Lions even win one more game? PATS.

The SAINTS should definitely not lose another home game. It's had to win in the dome post-katrina. The only way they lose, is if they beat themselves. This should be a good game, because Gore and Smith are both playing well. Look for my boys to do well against the rush, and force Smith to throw and hopefully make errors.

Just for the hell of it, I'm going to pick the CARDINALS over the Rams. I just don't think either one of these teams are very good...but Leinart is.

It wouldn't suprise me if MIAMI wins out the season...so I'm picking them over Jax.

Pillow fight of the week: Texans vs Raiders. I'll pick OAKLAND solely based on the fact that they are playing at home...and because SAPP is awesome.

Just for PYRO, I'm going to say not only that the Steelers will lose against the BUCS, but that worthlessberger will fuck up the remainder of the season and lose every game.

Giants vs Cowboys should be another decent game this week. I'm predicting the Giants to FINALLY put up a fight, but I think the COWBOYS will win it in the end. The Giants are just falling apart..and the Cowboys keep getting better each week.

I'm picking DENVER over Seattle because it's hard to win at mile-high...and because Seattle didn't look too hot against GB. The weather was awful though, so maybe that"s an unfair judgement. They're still playing in mile-high. If Seattle beats Denver, it will be the biggest breakthrough of their season.

It's going to be hard for the Eagles to win another game this year without McNabb. Not that I think he's that great, but the team works well with, and is very used to him. Plus, CAROLINA is fighting for the division and hoping for a Saints loss. On a side note, I think Delhomme is very overrated and just has good receivers. PEPPERS IS SOOOOOOOOO GOOD THOUGH!

The end.

If anything, I think he's underrated. The guy came in at halftime in the season opener in 2003 and we went to the Super Bowl. The guy throws a couple of interceptions and all of a sudden he needs to be benched.

I also would have picked the Ravens to win, so I'm also at -1. Here's my picks:

Jets vs Packers- well, the Packers lost in the snow black metal style ( ) last Monday and I just don't see them winning on Sunday. If I remember correctly, the Packers have the worst defense in the league and I don't see them stopping the Jet's receivers.

Cardinals vs Rams- I'm gonna say that the Rams will be able to win, finally. The Cardinals have been sloppy all year and I don't have much failth in their rookie QB. Don't be surprised to see Leonard Little getting some sacks too.

Falcons vs Redskins- The Redskins have been plagued with injuries and I really don't see them being able to beat any team at all at this point. I"m predicting a low-scoring game.

Lions vs Patriots- gee, I wonder...

Colts vs Titans- gee, I wonder...

Chiefs vs Browns- uhhh... Chiefs! I"m expecting a blowout.

Vikings vs Bears- I haven't been impressed with either team lately, but I'm gonna say that the Bears' defense will win the game. I'm predicting many turnovers.

Chargers vs Bills- well, the Bills fucking suck this year and the Chargers don't. I'm expecting Tomlinson to run all over the Bills.

49ers vs Saints- The 49ers are actually a threat to the Seahawks cuz their in the same division, so I hope the Saints can help me out here. I'm going to predict their win because, well, they're better.

Texans vs Gayders- I'll consider it to be punishment if I was forced to watch this. I'm going to say that the Texans will win because they have at least one or two bright spots on their team.

Jaguars vs Dolphins- A couple of weeks ago, the Dolphins decided that they actually wanted to play this year, and since then, they've been winning. The Jags have been inconsistant for the last few years, while the Dolphins are red hot. Miami wins.

Cowboys vs Giants- The Cowboys had a big win last week and the Giants are in the process of imploding. I think the Cowboys will feed off their momentum and the Giants' dysfunctionality (whoa...big word) for the win.

Bucs vs Faggots- damn...I actually think that the faggots (Steelers) will win due to the Bucs' high level of suckyness. I'm expecting a lot of turnovers.

Panthers vs Eagles- Since McNabb is hurt, this game is easier for me to predict. I see the Panthers winning quite easily on Monday.

Honestly, I like Delhomme. I was pissed that the Saints traded him and invested such a rediculous amount of money on Brooks, the worst QB in the league...but I was happy that Delhomme had such a breakthrough the next year with Carolina. Regardless of all that, you have to judge QB's from year to year. (Rich Gannon). D-man has looked pretty sloppy, but maybe he isn't overrated or underrated...either way I wouldn't place him in the top-tier QB's in the NFL. I think right now, more than anything, his receivers are making him look better than he is playing. If he stops making mistakes, the Panthers will be fine.

I also haven't seen too many Carolina games this year, so if ESPN shows highlights of him playing shitty, that's all I can go by.

He's definitely not among the NFL's elite QB's, like Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but he is still a solid quarterback. He's in a bit of a rough strut right now though. I think he'll come through.

Keyshawn has dissapointed me so far this season. He's not really helping out as much as he's capable of.

Hmmm, the Titans beat the Colts, that's unexpected.

Am I the only that gets annoyed by Peyton Manning taking 203948205 seconds to snap the ball because he has to shout something to each individual person on the offense first?

Let's do some playoff scenarios:

AFC Playoff Standings
===============
1. Indianapolis (10-2) Better Conference record than Chargers.
2. San Diego (10-2)
3. Baltimore (9-3) Better Conference record than Patriots.
4. New England (9-3)
5. Cincinnati (7-5) Better Conference record than Jets, Jaguars, Chiefs. (Ahead of Denver because the Chiefs lead Denver in their Division.)
6. N.Y. Jets (7-5) Better Conference record than Jaguars, Chiefs. (Ahead of Denver because the Chiefs lead Denver in their Division.)

The Bubble
========
7. Jacksonville (7-5)
8. Kansas City (7-5)
9. Denver (7-5)

The Lowdown
=========
The Colts control their own destiny, and have a moderate schedule for the rest of the season. They need to win out if they want to clinch home field advantage for the playoffs. The Chargers have a slightly more difficult schedule. They need to win out, and hope for a Colts loss (which is definitely not out of the question) for home field advantage. I'm expecting for both of these teams to recieve playoff byes. Baltimore and New England are both on tap to win their divisions, and gain home field advantage for the opening round of the playoffs. Both teams have moderate to easy schedules. There are 5 7-5 teams, none of which are playing as well as the top 4 AFC teams. Right now, the Bengals and the Jets control their own destinies, but I'm expecting these teams to go back and forth each week.

NFC Playoff Standings
===============
1. Chicago (10-2) The Bears have clinched the NFC North.
2. New Orleans (8-4) Better conference record than Seahawks and Cowboys.
3. Seattle (8-4) Better conference record than Cowboys.
4. Dallas (8-4)
5. Carolina (6-5) Play tonight.
6. N.Y. Giants (6-6) Head to head win over the Falcons.

The Bubble
========
7. Atlanta (6-6)
8. Philadelphia (5-6)

The Lowdown
=========
The Bears have a pathetic schedule, and although Grossman is absolute garbage, it looks like their special teams and defense have just about given them home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Saints control their own destiny for gaining a first-round bye, and also play the Cowboys Sunday night. If the Saints lose, the Seahawks will be in 2nd, but still competing against the Cowboys for the Bye...provided they win. Carolina needs to win tonight, continue to win, and hope for all the 8-4 teams to lose if they want a bye. The Saints have to play three top-NFC teams (Carolina, Dallas, and the Giants), and have the toughest remaining schedule. IMO, the Giants, the Falcons and the Eagles are all garbage.

Current Wild-Card Matchups
===================
N.Y. Jets at Baltimore Ravens
Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots

Carolina Panthers at Dallas Cowboys
New York Giants at Seattle Seahawks
