Thrash metal fans rejoice! Exodus, one of the genre's most important bands is back. Released on February 2nd (the anniversary of singer Paul Baloff's death), "Tempo Of The Damned" is as much a tribute to Baloff and the entire bay area thrash scene as it is a fantastic rejuvenation of Exodus' core sound. To put it in blunt terms - this album is vintage Exodus and it rocks!! This is great news considering so many people have written this band off.

Exodus is my favorite thrash metal band out there & this is one of their best, along with "Shovel Headed Kill Machine", "Atrocity Exhibition A", "Let There Be Blood" (re-recording of Bonded By Blood), & "Another Lesson in Violence" (live). Souza is one of my favorite thrash vocalist. Not sure why he left the band, now hes with Tenet. Hunting is one of my favorite drummers, Gary Holt is one of my favorite guitarist, & Gibson is one of favorite bass players. I just love this band, well the new stuff, not so much their 80's. Sorry to say it, but i didnt really like Paul Baloff until the '97 live album, his voice just didnt seem to blend til then.

Off the Song "Culling the Herd"
They're everywhere and everyplace
Scum of the human race
Stickin to my skin like a rash
Society's their scapegoat
But I am the antidote
And it's time to take out the trash

The world's a big cesspit
Of puke and piss and dogshit
But I ain't gonna be it's whore
Follow and I'll lead the way
Predators are now the prey
Results like these are hard to ignore

You may think I'm insane
Or maybe just a little absurd
What you don't understand is
I'm just culling, I'm just culling the herd

I know I'm not the only one
Who thinks that something must be done
To clean the garbage up off the street
Dare to look me in the eye
I bring the truth, never lie
To me, they're just another piece of meat
The punishment will be swift and sure
For this desease, I am the cure
No problem, the doctor is in
My prescription for a better life's
A riffle or a razor knife
Remove whoever's under your skin

But please, don't call it a murder
Cause murder's such a dirty word
What you don't understand is
I'm just culling, I'm just culling the herd

[1st Solo R. Hunolt]

[2nd Solo G. Holt]

When will everyone realize
Some people should be sterilized
Their tubes are only fit to be tied
All they do is shit and breed
To ignorant to ever succeed
Stupidity should not be multiplied
Lend them not a helping hand
Or the future will be damned
The world will take a turn for the worse
The human race should be purified
Or we'll all be mongrelized
Implement the cure for the curse

You may think I'm a madman
Or maybe just a little disturbed
What you don't understand is
I'm just culling, I'm just culling the herd

Is Exodus a racist band? I haven't noticed any racist lyrics from them in the past, but this seems pretty bad on the surface.. I wouldn't think they would be, Didn't Kirk Hammett start them? And he's half Filipino. Please tell me theyre not! and explain please.

EDIT: put the whole songs lyrics on this post, and bolded the lyrics in question.

They're a thrash metal band. They're required by law to hate everything. As a point, here are the lyrics to 'Shroud of Urine'. (Which is my favorite song on the album, by the way.)

God isn't great
Just an icon of hate
Intolerance and despise
Believe in me
And I will set you free
I never heard a bigger pack of lies
It's ludicrous
That any one of us
Would want to be led by the blind
It's all in vain
It'll be your bane
If you're looking for the divine

If they are racist, then they must also be anti-religious, and by extrapolation, anti-everything else. When it comes right down to it, they're merely trying to entertain people.

Yeah, 'Shroud of Urine' is a great song.. What's also interesting is that Gary Holt, who has the credit for writing both songs ('Culling of The Herd' and 'Shroud of Urine') is actually supposedly an Obama supporter. That's why it doesn't make sense to me. Proof...
http://heavymetal.about.com/od/interviews/a/exodus_2.htm

In another interview I read I kind of got the hint that it was a satirical song aimed at the Bush administration.. This is most likely the case. Oh Well, still a great song. I just don't like supporting racism.

Just got the album, so far only listened to blacklisted cause i always listen to shit on shuffle, and hot damn.. that song was damn near worth the money right there. I wouldn't say that they're racist, I'd just say they're kickass by definition, they hate everything.

"Shroud Of Urine" is an anti-christianity song. "Culling The Herd" is basically aimed at the scum of society: Murderers, rapists, and probably the yob culture if they lived in the UK. Its not racist at all.

As for this album, its one of a tiny amount of modern thrash albums Id refer to as a classic. And is better than all their albums with Rob Dukes, IMO.

Agreed. It's superior to the three afterwards. It's not really because of the vocals that that's the case for me. But because the songs are way more concise and to the point here. No, endless and pointless meandering going on. It is so immensely focused.

Exactly the same here. I do prefer Zetro to Rob, but I think Rob is a decent replacement, and does well as Exodus vocalist. I think the problem with the Rob Dukes albums, is Gary Holt trying too hard to be "brutal", and concentrating more on riff overload than concise songwriting. I do like some of the Rob Dukes era songs, but the albums themselves are patchy, and dont really have any momentum or consistency. What makes Tempo so great, is it's very focussed and tight, just like the best of their 80's material. The album is certainly a rarity, in that it really stands up with their classic 80's stuff and deserves to be placed alongside it. xD

Yeah, I looked into reading some interviews of Gary Holt online and he's definitely pretty far left and was indeed an Obama supporter during the election. The lyrics about purifying the human race or else being mongrelized raised my eyebrow the first time I heard them though, but after listening to his political stances It seems like he's mocking right-wing hate rhetoric with this song, especially eugenics. (Seeing as both he and I are from California, the stronghold of the American Eugenics Movement- most of the forced steralizations of Native Americans and Blacks took place here). I'd want to ask him if I'm right if I ever meet him

I know your comment is fairly old at this point, but I guess I should give my two cents. Basically, a lot of their works (especially with Zetro at the helm) has had an uncommon way of conveying their point across; usually by placing themselves in the perspective of the ones they're commenting about. If these lyrics are supposedly racist, take it that it's from the side they are trying to poke a stick at; they used this direct-approach with ''War Is My Shepherd'' too, where they're obviously highlighting America's pro-war/pro-Christian contradiction. It just makes it easier to express political commentary at times in this manner.

Also, with thrash in general, they might just be generally aggressive torwards scumbags in-context. I don't see any deragatory terms in the lyrics or even any allusions to such comments. They've gotta history of such lyrical content; focusing on wanting to piss on the people in their live's that were real pricks. An example is ''Verbal Razors'' from Fabulous Disaster.

In short, I highly doubt that they themselves are racist. At the very most, they've got a certain animosity torwards general cunts.

I never believed so...if they do, they we're hated, which they aren't! They're different, Exodus are an "open-eyes band" that don't just write their lyrics for fun, but for lesson purposes, in that i believe! They simply just don't got the ideas of write something just to sell...like for exemple: Metallica or Megadeth are...sorry fans, but i'd have to say it, and i looove Megadeth, but most of their recent songs and lyrics are just lame...take a look at Endgame and see what i'm trying to talk about, with exception of the title track, which have excelent sci-fi lyrics...

I believe the song 'Culling the Herd' is about people in society who just don't pull their weight or waste their lives, its not racist, nothing suggests that it is. For example this line: "Remove whoever's under your skin", just anger towards general scum.

I am guessing you mean after the reunion. Because Tempo is of course the fifth Exodus album Zetro sings on.

Rob Dukes isn't too bad and actually sounds a lot like Zetro. Shame that the music after Tempo Of The Damned has gone downhill immensely.

same. The only reason BBB is that good its because it portrays perfectly what that time was meant to capture: Pure fucking agression. Zetro is so much more balanced with his Brian Johnson-like voice tone. Imho, Exodus suffered greatly with his departure since he was already estabilished as the Exodus distinctive voice.

I can't believe it's been 17 years since this beast was released and it's still one of the best newer thrash metal albums around. Even after all these years it's just as recognizable and fun as it ever was, the riffs are tight and groovy as hell and the top notch production kills every one of those cookie-cutter thrash albums that some lamer trash bands release every now and then.
