Mar De Grises are a band that utilize an alchemical approach to music. Their process combines the heavy emotional impact of doom metal with a cerebral prog influence and imagination inspiring ambient passages to create sonic gold. As a result, the music ultimately appeals to listeners on many levels. Streams Inwards, their third full length, sees the band continuing to employ the aforementioned elements of their arsenal, adding in some Post-metal to boot. (Enough so that the Seasons Of Mist site lists the band as Post-Doom. I guess journalists can feel free to like the band now that the "post-" tag is affixed)

post doom
Sep 02, 2010
The Chilean masters of prog-post doom have returned with their third, much anticipated full-length. The approach is similar to prior albums, in incorporating prog and post metal as well as ambient influences into their doom. It's appealing on emotional and cerebral levels. Quite possibly 2010's best release to date.

Metal Storm Awards 2010 is helping me discover some great shit!

The word gen means "illusion" or "apparition." In India, a man who uses conjury is called a genjutsushi ["a master of illusion technique"]. Everything in this world is but a marionette show. Thus we use the word gen.

I really don't think that this should be in the "Best Doom Metal Album" category,it's more like progressive, experimental, post.

It has those influences in it indeed, but the largest part of the album is still doom. It is doom with those influences hence in the Doom Metal category.

I had the opportunity to spin this while leaving for walk at 6 in morning and it is absolutely fantastic. Nothing less drawn or teared off after so many years and sounds still fresh and exciting.

Shining Human Skin probabaly will be the highlight of Stream Inwards.

This album is funny; if the whole album was of the quality of Spectral Ocean onwards, I would be pretty content with what would be a fairly strong release - Knotted Delirium in particular is a very interesting and different song. However, I always feel a slight let-down once I reach Spectral Ocean, just becuase I know the rest of the music can't compare to the absolutely phenomenal opening trio of songs - all fairly different but all equally brilliant. I honestly think it's one of the most impressive opening quarter-hours of an album I've ever encountered, and an album that maintained that level of quality throughout would be an absolute world-beater. As it is, it's still a great album that slightly blows its load too early on.

I prefer Poema Arcanus. This is good, a bit melodic, I prefer this more as previous one , debut is best no doubt, but this is strong. I like that its long even ''non metal'' parts are more metal. Prev one has more ''ambient, inmdustrial'' here are more less closer to sound, I like. Strong album, and also it has abit high value since band is split up. Sad it happened.

A very good proposal, an album that really deserves to be listened to from beginning to end. It's a kind of journey; not epic, but dark, intriguing, and mysterious. It's definitely not my favorite style, but that doesn't stop me from recognizing good work; it invites me to discover more similar bands. Great work!
