This album seems to separate the two sounds of Megadeth in the 90's, with the radio rock and thrash sounds being confined to their own songs rather than Megadeth trying to mix (or abandon one of) the two. This makes for an album that shifts gears every once in a while, with thrash tracks punctuating the more radio-oriented efforts. It also ends up with an album of two halves being merged together, rather than creating one strong whole.

1997 was the year of the renewal for Megadeth. Dave Mustaine and his three mates came back after three fabulous albums. Yet it must be said that since 1994 and Youthanasia, there had been a period of scarcity. So Megadeth hired a new producer [you hear it!], Dan Huff, a strange choice, for he was mainly known for his work in country-music. At the first listening, the word renewal seems wrong, while summary sounds righter. Cryptic Writings is actually the album of maturity.

This butt is crazy.

Isn't it true that guy's initial days in MS starts with blind fanboyism? I remember I did for Suicide Silence but wasn't a fan boy of that band.

which one you would say as an iffy track in this album ?

I've always found "Have Cool, Will Travel" to be a bit silly, and "Sin" is overall, a dull track, although I like the mid-section and the solos. I just wish they'd been attatched to a better song. lol Lyrically I find "Trust" to be cringeworthy, which definitely brings that song down a bit for me, although musically it's decent. But a terrible choice for an opening track, due to it's lack of energy.

That's funny because for me Trust is the best song to "open" the album. As someone said this album have some jazz elemnts (in "I'll Get Even" wich is interesting). A good album with some awesome songs but as you said some songs drag the album a bit down

Trust is an okay song.

That said, I really like the live version:

Trust is the only reason I played this album when I was younger. I eventually just got bored of having it take so much space on my hard drive, and deleted everything but Trust. Thus breaching one of my imaginary rules: never have single songs lying around just like that. Proves how much I just love that song.

I used to love that song too, until I heard the Spanish version.

(I also used to have that rule btw. In fact, I kind of still do.)

Oh my god I can't remember this album being this bad, Megadeth trying to write mainstream radio friendly rock and sadly it's not even catchy as many of the tracks on Risk are, this is just downright boring, dragging and lacks any kind of decent song ideas. It's really shows how desperate Mustaine was to follow Metallica in trying to get as much radio play as possible. It opens up decent with Trust (which however sounds 10 times better live) but after that it takes until track 8 (that's 6 tracks of pure garbage inbetween!!) when we get something thats listenable again. Have Will Cool Will Travel is again worthless but weird enough all three last songs aren't actually that bad, they are all pretty good, especially She-Wolf and Vortex.

If you go chronologically its worst band album, but that time super stars in 90's put even worst rubbish albums out as this one. Some songs are good, whit deep meaning. Not good to remember, but going trough disco and judging, you can give a try. I hated it then, now I dont hate, but dont like it so much.

Pretty underwhelming one, although I really like Trust and She Wolf, the rest doesn't really stand up to it

Is it that bad?... Is it really radio sound,???... I don't agree.... It's a great album...maybe a little softer than thrash... But who cares when you get good tracks like this.
