Hailing from Finland, Sonata Arctica was one of the revelations of the year 1999 . The young band played very fast tempo melodies [the so-called speed metal], enhanced by splendid keyboards and breathtaking guitar lines. "Ecliptica" was their first full-length album and was the beginning of the arctic phenomenon.

Found this album quite late and was surprised I was still able to discover a power metal that was great.

If this album could be described in only a single word...? Masterpiece. Every riff, beat and cheesy power metal screams are just perfect, from the first drum beats of Blank File, through the catchy speed, addded with the powerfull Tony vocal habilities in the ballads, is magnific. A trip into the cheesy world of power metal, and certainly the album that best defines the genre, in my opinion. It's sad that everything after it changed. Well, let's replay this album on and on... and at least we have the demo tapes. Neverthless, a masterpiece.

Brilliant album. A lot of cheese of course, it's euro power metal after all ffs.
Some people simply love cheese from time to time, others can feel free to go back chewing their black metal potatoes

Very typical late 90's Stratovarius-inspired Finnish power metal with cheesy lyrics, happy sing-a-long choruses and all the other cliches. I remember hearing these songs first time some time around early 2000's when some teenage school band played covers of them on TV. At first I didn't enjoy this kind of flowery metal, but now I feel like the autotune-filled musical hell of late 2010's and 2020's has taught me to appreciate even these cheesier albums a helluva lot more than I used to.

I have to say over the last few years I have grown alot more tolerant to this type of flower power metal style, for someone who has been an avid black metal listener for years, I have grown fond of bands I thought I would never warm to, but unfortunately Sonata Arctica I have struggled with most.

I admit there are a few tracks on this album I quite like, "Blank File" and "My Land" probably my picks of the bunch, eventough the lyrics are a wee bit ridiculous. Unfortunately the rest of the album has defeated me in terms of the sheer amount of cheesiness, and the songs "Kingdom For A Heart" and "Fullmoon" I just found lame tbh.

This is definitely not a bad album by all means, in fact overall it's actually pretty good, it's just corny as hell.

Blank file, My land, Kingdom for a heart and Destruction preventer are amazing. Replica, Fullmoon and Letter to Dana are fantastic. The rest are great as well. What a debut!
