Another excellent Converge album, with every song being just as intense as the last one. In particular the more mellower tracks such as 'The lowest common Denominator' and 'Tear of the Swine' showcase a lot of this band's ability to be diverse.

I just erased a 1 vote because of vote abuse -- the user rated all Converge albums with 1s. That though didnt help the album's average rating much apparently. And I am afraid my own rating doesnt help you either here.

I'm curious as to why you have this at 5, especially since you gave all their other albums a 6 or a 7

The Lowest Common Denominator is one of their best songs.

I've now revisited their first four full-length albums, and here is some words.
The debut lacks a bit in production, and vocals are on the downside. But I like the songwriting, some good riffing here and there, and it has this tiny bit of progressive touch, which eventually gives it the mathcore tag I guess. Still it is also quite a bit harcore-ish.
The 1996 album is different from the debut. They are generally drifting more into the "core" direction now I'd say, which just makes it more challenging for me to enjoy the singing. But there is also some good songwriting here.
With When Forever Comes Crashing they finally fully paved their mathcore paths I guess, which I am generally not a huge fan of I'll admit. It is not entirely different from the predecessor, but there is not much in the songwriting I enjoy here (thus my slightly lower rating).
And with Jane Doe they've perfected their mathcore approach I'd say. You've got this hardcore-punk-ish basis that is still present, then this jazzy-like dissonance, the pace shifts, the screaming, and here there is also a lot of interesting approaches in the songwriting, which makes this my favourite of their first four albums.
When it comes to their best album overall, I also have their 2012 album in the race, this one I havent revisted yet though.

All right, thanks for the in depth explanation
I haven't listened to their full discography myself but the one that stood out the most to me so far was definitely Axe To Fall, which I keep coming back to. I haven't listened to their last 3 though so I probably have good surprises in store.
