This album is the first production of the later called ?The Middle Ages Trilogy?, a set of three digipacks, each containing several bonus tracks, three concept albums each dealing with a different topic. Thematically Tunes Of War is all about scottish history and the scottish efforts to stay sovereign from England.

This first concept album features two of the bands? standards: ?The Dark Of The Sun? which was later released as single, live classics such as ?Scotland United? and something which Grave Digger were never famous for: a good ballad (?The Ballad Of Mary?).

One of the golden classics of heavy metal and truly a gem in Grave Digger discography. "Rebellion" could be considered one of the best heavy metal sing-along songs ever written.

I think you're writing the truth here. This is the first GD album to me, where they managed to write plenty of great songs.

One of greatest albums in my time, in my youth, but somehow when you listen all from 1th in order, you don't see this as so special, but as concept its brilliant, best concept album about Scotland.

Great album. Rebellion is the only song I like that has a bagpipe in it.

This one is a little messy and all over the place as if GD were coming out of the generic era and trying to creare a concept with an advanced touch. I was tempted to give it a 6 but there are some nice tracks and powerful sections in some songs + it was released when the market was not oversaturated so much with bands so it was good back then.
"Excalibur" would be their milestone and the vocals which I find average in most of their albums are well executed there and even epic at times.

I don't care about the concept itself, but as a metal album it's pretty much solid as solid gets. I can't get this impression out of my head, that Sabaton took most of their inspiration from this band and just added more mainstream production to the mix.

The clans are marching -- that catchy tune with the bagpipe there. I have it in my head, now that I read your comment. Last spin 15 years or so ago I guess. Not much left from the rest of the album though.

First of all, I really like the album and have many memories associated with it (two weeks in Scotland after Wacken, running around drunken with kilt and battle vest, listening to Grave Digger), but it's still a clear drop in quality compared to Heart of Darkness. It also marked the beginning of turning every chorus into a sing-along. The concept is great, though not entirely without historical errors.

Faves: The Dark Of The Sun, William Wallace (Braveheart), The Bruce (The Lion King), Cry For Freedom (James The VI), Killing Time, Rebellion (The Clans Are Marching) and Culledon Muir
