(Progressive) Power Metal

Italy's power metal scene is quite big, though only a few bands succeed to get widely known. At first, by reading the name of the band, I thought Razorblade's deadly weapon in that competition would be speed. Once again I was wrong, cause Razorblade is actually more of a prog power band (well, still more power than progressive). Seeds Of Deception is their second demo, the first one - entitled First Cut - having been released early in 2005.

This demo contains four songs and a keyboard intro, Abstraction, which definitely serves its purpose since it introduces the listener to the band's typical sound, reminiscent of the AOR genre. It's actually my favorite track from Seeds Of Deception... But that doesn't mean the songs are bad, don't worry. In fact, I like all their songs but I find Obedience and Of Stormy Canvas to be better than Speed Of Time and Emerald Dawn. As the titles suggest, the latter songs are more power metal oriented and also a lot less original despite hosting some nice melodies and instrumental passages. One thing that has to be said is that the bass work in all songs is very good, the highlight being the solo during Speed Of Time's slow interlude.

The overall production of Seeds Of Deception is not bad but can definitely be improved. However, the band cared about the physical aspect of their demo, providing a nice booklet and a fully decorated disc. In my opinion, Razorblade is a good band that should probably develop the progressive aspect of their music and get rid of the unoriginal power metal parts some of their current songs contain.

Yeah I had some demos songs from this band. As you wrote very well here, they are mostly classified as power rather than progressive. Well it depends from the point of view . They are getting quite popular and i think they surely have a positive start from these demos .
Thanks Wratchild for this review
