H.R. Giger - Iconic Surrealist Artist Passes Away

Swiss renowned surrealist artist H.R. Giger has passed away. H. R. Giger is known for his sculptures, paintings and furniture, and also for designing the monster in the Alien movies, and several metal album covers like Celtic Frost's legendary To Mega Therion, and Carcass' Heartwork front album sculpture. More recently, his artwork was featured on Triptykon's new album Melana Chasmata and also Eparistera Daimones. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall, Swiss public television, SRF, has reported.

You can read Triptykon's heartfelt words about the artist on their Facebook page. Tom Warrior says: "Regardless of anything I may write about H.R. Giger, however, none of these words will ever be able to truly, accurately describe him as a person and as a friend. It is utterly inconceivable to imagine a world without his wit, his perception, his genius, his horizon, his determination, his humour, his friendship, and his immeasurable kindness. And yet, we are now left in exactly such a world."

Other album covers by H.R. Giger include Atrocity's Hallucinations, Danzig's Danzig III: How The Gods Kill, and many more.

May he rest in peace.

In 1998, he opened his own museum, H.R. Giger Museum, in Gruyères in central Switzerland, which displays many of his own paintings, sculptures and film designs as well as his private art collection.

Giger was one of my favorite artists. I think the only one whose art I really appreciated more was Zdzislaw Beksinski's, and he's dead too. Sad, sad day.

Someone please tell me Bad English is "trolling" (or whatever you call that annoying shit people do). I'm not a big art fan but i really liked Giger's stuff. Had some posters on my walls when i was younger. Loved the detail. And i'm a big Aliens fan. Not to mention some of the coolest album artwork ever. Sad news indeed.

Really a great artist. One of those guys with such a distinctive style that you could pick out artworks by him even if you never saw them before or knew who made them. Made some wicked album covers too.

Thanks for all the cool stuff over the years, H.R.

Theres a lot less penises and vaginas in this world now. I was mesmerised by his New York City series...
RIP Hans.
Tom Warrior explained to me a fascinating insight into his days before this few years back and I am making it a life mission to get to his museum bar and main publications. Hope his modern works get there deserved publibshing soon.

My generation is starting to dwindle at an accelerated rate. It isn't the best feeling in the world to see it happening and yet here is another icon we have lost. HR's artwork has never been mistaken for anyone else's. He was truly an icon and a major influence to not just artists but people from all over the world. He will be missed!

This is very sad news. The art world has definitely lost a true legend, with Giger's passing. For designing the iconic Xenomorph alone, he should be regarded as a legend, never mind all his other exceptional works of art. R.I.P. \m/

H.R. Giger didn't do that one, Dan Seagrave did. I'm probably missing something here though.

Anyway, while Edgar/K7/Bad English was being ridiculous, he was being attacked a bit too harshly in my opinion.

Obviously I knew H.R. Giger, but only from the design of the Alien, as that movie is one of my 3 favourite Sci-Fi movies ever (other two being Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey). On top of that, I'm not a fan of art by any means, so I can't say I'm upset by this. Still a shame of course, seeing his highly influential work in both music and movies.
