As the metal world's premiere posse of scurvy Scottish scoundrels, Alestorm's job is to showcase their pirate shtick without completely overshadowing the music. While Back Through Time hosted a couple of new classics and even brought some new tricks to the table, "Scraping The Barrel" rang a little too true for most of the album. I feared that Alestorm had lost their touch, but Sunset On The Golden Age has revealed that to be merely the calm before the storm.

Alestorm - the band that sings about booze a bit more than Korpiklaani, and probably drinks a bit more than them, too. Their last album stormed in during summer 2014 with a big anticipation from their fans. The work is the last one with their now ex-guitarist Dani Evans, who had been a part of the band since their first album.

I was hoping something really good after their last album, but this is boring.

This is exactly the kind of behaviour that goes with this kind of band that I hate.

This album is a grower. It's a really fun power metal album but imo slightly less inspired than Back Through Time was. After a few spins i'd go as far as saying 3 or 4 of the songs are some of the best stuff they've ever written, most notably 'Quest For Ships' and the title track. Not a 10 for me because of the song Drink, which is the album's weak track. They more than make up for it in the overall album direction though and the mixture of styles... musically this is more varied from the majority of their discography.

Some of the songs here are great, like "Walk the Plank" and "Mead from Hell", but I think the band suffer slightly when they attempt to take their sound into ambitious/serious territory, like in "1741" and the title track. That said, I had a "barrel" of fun listening to this.

I think that some songs follow the same chords, if you guys know what I mean.. 4 chords repeating, but at all, songs can get under your skin.. Very good album anyway..

The album doesn't quite deliver, but at least 1741 is great.

I fucking love Alestorm. Their live shows are top-notch fun, if a little immature.

This album was caught me off guard with a few things done differently from their last album.

I didn't expect little flecks of 8-bit sounds. Nor did I expect spontaneous death metal vocals. I CERTAINLY expect rapping in the "hangover" track.

Holy shit, I think I love this album... Very spontaneous and fun.

Some people may think this is cheesy, but this album is catchy without being boring. I found a simple joy in listening to this album, and it really brings out the emotions. I think I can feel this feeling even more in the live performance.

I used to think Folk and Power Metal were cheesy, and I still do for the most part. But I can put that aside when listening to this album, it's so fun.
