Alter Bridge rose from the ashes of famed Christian rock group Creed back in 2004, releasing their debut album One Day Remains under heavy expectations. When I finished my first listen, I didn't see any possible connection to Creed; in fact, I felt Alter Bridge was far more aggressive, with thick, wide-ranging bass lines and a mix of high and low melodies.
This debut features the powerful work of bassist Brian, drumming machine Scott, and lead guitarist Mark - who pulls off some strong riffs and incredible solos throughout the album. Myles' voice fits perfectly with the music as well. One Day Remains is a bit of a mixed bag, with a few really good moments in the first half of the album while the second half acts as some sort of goodbye. "Metalingus" turns out to be the highlight track of this record: great pounding drums with complementary guitar riffs and the superb voice of Myles. This track could easily be considered one of the best songs Alter Bridge have ever recorded. It's been used in many games, movies, and sports shows.
The major slip off has been songwriting and obsolete lyrics, which dilute the impact. The songs are too straightforward and seem to lack inspiration. It has mainstream appeal but isn't likely to draw in first-time listeners looking for something a bit more challenging. The lyrics are third-tier Hybrid Theory-era Linkin Park material. They could have done away with the ballad, which just felt unnecessary. Overall, the tracks are heavy, carry a lot of punch, and have some killer riffs. Each song creates their own special vibes. But, the fact remains that One Day Remains, for me, is just a satisfactory record. Not a great debut indeed.

I don't think that "In Loving Memory" was unnecessary, both musically (the album needed a breath) and lirically (Mark Tremonti wrote it in memory of his mother, who had recently passed away). Anyway, although I can admit this isn't the best Alter Bridge record, I think it deserves something around an 8, even if I get what you're saying.

If you have noticed one thing, the flow of first half of the album didn't properly leverage on the second half. I was pretty ecstatic when I heard "Metalingus" and I thought(at that time) this whole record will be filled with these superb tracks. But, turns out it was very shallow performance. Well, post-ODR, I think they did splendid job with brilliant records spitted from Alter Bridge camp.

Fair enough rating and review. I think it's a solid debut album, with some enjoyable tracks. They are the master of the rock ballad, that's for sure. For me the memorable track is "Open Your Eyes".
