Sometimes logistics can be both a bitch and a blessing. Siaskel was formed way back in 2003 and the recordings for their debut were already done by 2011, and now it has finally been released. Just in the same way, I've been listening to this black/death mix for quite a while already and only now do I feel compelled to write about them. Both waits seem to have given positive results.
Hailing from Chile, Siaskel is a black/death metal band with themes centered in the myths and rituals of the Selk'nam people. A mysterious group of South American natives who had the creepiest fashion sense during those years. Does the music reflect such uniqueness and dark undertones? Well, not exactly. The album is damn solid though and that's the word of the day, kids. This stuff is solid. It barely goes over 30 minutes but all the fat has been cut off in ways liposuctions just can't match.
The foundation of the songwriting lies in old school death metal, not unlike the classic Swedish bands. Then it's mixed with the viciousness of black metal, extremely throaty growls and violent drumming. There's a promise of variation in atmospheric intros and interludes hidden here and there (like in "Habshi") but it's mostly catchy and solid riffs on top of each other.
While the wow-factor isn't big on this album it does pack a punch and its compact format contributes to keeping things interesting enough throughout the album. There's some clear potential going on here and it'll be exciting to see if Siaskel can capitalize on their moments of dynamics and variation for their next album in order to make the experience more imposing.
