Atmospheric doom?

Redundant tag (like anything ese tht has "atmospheric" in it). Basically a mix of post, doom, drone, ambient. I dig it.

I meant why's it called atmospheric doom when it isn't atmospheric, and I wouldn't call it doom, either. More like sludge or stoner. (I often get those 2 mixed up)

Uuuuh... There's no criteria for what's atmospheric or not. That's why I find that tag so useless. It boils down to opinions. Atmospheric is basically any sort of Music as any kind produces an atmosphere to some that listens to it.

I don't consider this stoner by any chance as I don't find it particuarly groovy for example and it lacks the aggression or harshness of sludge, let alone the hardcore undertones of sludge which are definitely not present here.

Well looks like that's the final verdict then if it has your approval, Mr. Doom Man!
Really, though, I was kinda struggling with what styles to tag these guys as when I added them, as the album's sound is indeed quite diverse and has a nice host of influences to it

And if I didn't tell you already, this band is composed of two very good friends of mine from Miami

I used to mix them up a lot as well, myself. From what I've really gathered in the past year and a half or so.... sludge metal is basically stoner + hardcore and Southern rock influences. It's stoner based, definitely, but more abrasive, meaner, and often heavier as well due to more downtuned guitars. I think the hardcore influence is part of the main key though, if you listen to early Eyehategod for example, you can especially hear that in them and it's a difference that most definitely does separate sludge from stoner

Mike Williams from Eyehategod said it best when he described their style.
Black Sabbath + Black Flag = Sludge.

If I hear both those bands at some point in a song I'm gonna bet on some sludge most of the time.

I wouldn't call Saint Vitus sludge.

Ah well, there goes his comment out of the window. It can be found in a booklet of their debut or sophomore, can't remember. Well, he didn't exactly define sludge in that commentary of the album, he just said what they wanted to do and since they are one of the first names in the genre, I tend to search for those sounds when I'm having a trouble knowing if there's sludge in it or not.

Not in Saint Vitus, though.
