People in to metal will probably at least like some of the music, but hate the singing.

Same for many metal genres, some people like the music but can't stand growls or female vocals altogether.

Who is this stuff aimed at? You have pretty good instrumentals, then children singing. People in to metal will probably at least like some of the music, but hate the singing. Children will like the vocals and not the instruments.

Its like having a horror film with Kermit the frog as a brutal killer.

What about "My Little Pony"?!

Oh come on, according to their bio the oldest singer is 18 now. That's older than for example Simone Simons when she joined Epica ( not to compare them, saying this in regards to the 'children singing'). I could agree with that comment for some of their older songs I've heard, which were a weird mixture of j-pop with metal, but this sounds like any other female fronted power-ish metal band.

Keep in mind that they are Japanese and their culture looks often weird for Americans and Europeans. Perhaps there is a big audience for this kind of music in Japan. I'm not saying it in a dismissive way. I happen to like many things from Japan in different domains and I probably know a bit more about Japan than some. I find Japanese fascinating at times, yet there are times when I really don't understand Japanese things.
Japanese are a funny lot sometimes. I don't know if it can explain the popularity this band seems to have but it might be the reason.

This is what they call the idol industry. They take underage girls or boys (much like Western boy or girl bands) that can sing a little, dress them up, pretty them up, put them on a stage and sing. This idol industry has very strict rules for performers. A lot of the children doing this are deprived of a normal life.

Actually, thinking about it, I would probably watch it too. You could have a whole series of Muppet horror films.

The slightly sinister fact is that brand of squeaky-voiced J-pop (they call it "idol pop") isn't really aimed at kids. The main target audience is a particular group of men aged 20-40 who are utterly enthralled by idol groups' cute (or "kawaii") aesthetic. Plenty of kids listen to them too, but it's not how the idol groups make their money.

By crossing idol pop and metal, Babymetal's producers are basically tapping that audience in addition to Japan's metal crowd. The fact they might be turning a whole generation of Japanese preteen girls into metalheads is just a happy accident.

Yeah, has the same bland production and stale instrumentation.

It has much less annoying vocals, though.
