The first show of the tour is no small matter for any band, not even for experienced troopers who have been treading the stages of the world for the past four decades. Before the event I was planning on starting this review off along the lines of sucking and blowing, something to the extent of how the first step to a balloon animal is to blow hard, but, frankly, the truth of the matter is that Iron Maiden are on top of their game right off the bat and will simply blow you away with their show.
Adrian Smith and Bruce Dickinson
Over the years I've been immensely sceptical of the old-fart-category bands playing their classic repertoire to the similarly aged old-fart-category audience. Usually it looks like one old man reminiscing about the old days to another over a pint of bitter. However, once every now and then I've had to revise my prejudiced opinion and concede that, while metal is growing old and mouldy day by day, some bands are still delivering on entertainment for one reason or another. I've been surprised by how genuine and honest Twisted Sister were on stage, how excellent Europe were despite being plagued by that song, and even KISS were worth their dime for the stage show alone. Now Iron Maiden get to join that list.
The Legacy of the Beast World Tour is, as the name suggests, a tour of Iron Maiden classics, including songs that haven't been performed live in 10-15, or, in the case of "Flight of Icarus," in even 32 years. While that is usually in and of itself a twofold matter between fans desiring favourites and the band wanting to play fresh material, in this case it seems that either the band have made peace with their legacy or are genuinely enjoying it. It could also be that this was just the first gig of the tour but this joy of performing is noticeable. The songs were delivered with ease and a playful flourish.

Whatever your opinion of the classics is, there's no denying that an important part of the show is the presentation, which in Iron Maiden's case takes on more of a meaningful theatrical side-play than just a coolness gimmick. On a horseshoe-shaped stage representing a sort of cathedral, you get to be a witness to stories. From a Spitfire model hanging over the stage to a huge head of the beast, from a sword fight with Eddie to flamethrowers, from a cross to fireworks - all that just to help Bruce Dickinson deliver the message of each song to the eager audience. It is also highly remarkable how well it works as a whole, for, as Bruce remarked, being at war and being in church - the two things are often one and the same.
The reasons why Iron Maiden have earned my respect are numerous and varied but basically it boils down to a simple fact that the band look fresh and vital. Bless any of us to be as full of life and joy as these guys are at their age. The pillar of heavy metal stands strong and isn't showing any signs of cracking just yet. If you've never seen Iron Maiden live before, what you get is high professionalism and a very entertaining show of classics. If you have seen them live before, well, the show will still be entertaining and it may happen that you get to hear that one special favourite you haven't seen before.

Thanks for the setlist - it doesn't look bad at all and I can't wait for the concert next month. I was hoping that they could Afraid to Shoot Strangers, but I understand that they can't satisfy every single fan out there.

Like you here  And it's ok, because it's impossible to make one setlist to please everyone. I've seen Maiden live numerous times now, and still there are several songs I'd love to hear:- Rime of the Ancient Mariner - To Tame a Land - Alexander the Great - The Nomad - Transylvania - Genghis Khan - Infinite Dreams Just a few off the top of my head. I'm aware that some of these songs never get to be played live, so I'm not holding my breath for future shows.

Good set list from so long running band, trhey could play 2 shows one whit old songs up to Prayer, other day show after prayer Killers well non of song from that album is good , non has stuck whit a fans, so only 1th album in paul era is a killer one.

I'm kind of amazed that they've played some Blaze Bayley era songs and Flight of Icarus hasn't been played for decades! I guess they either finally agreed on a tempo or they put their differences aside for the fans.

And as for old-fart-category bands playing their old repertoire for an old-fart-category audience and the whole thing looking pretty sad and miserable; Saxon are also an exception to this rule.

Saw them at Hellfest and seeing them in London in a couple of weeks; wasn't expecting some of the song choices (the Piece Of Mind focus, For The Greater Good Of God, and more Bayley songs than Di'Anno tracks), but was pleasantly surprised by the variety, especially Flight Of Icarus. Will hopefully be in a crowd more receptive to non-classics than the people around me at Hellfest who only recognised/cared for The Trooper, Fear Of The Dark, and songs from Number of the beast

Written by Darkside Momo on 25.07.2018 at 17:59 It surprised me a bit, cos even at festivals, I've seen Maiden headline Sonisphere twice, and particularly the first time when a majority of their set was material from Brave New World thru to A Matter Of Life And Death, the people in my vicinity were getting into all those album tracks they played, although admittedly I was a bit further forward for both shows than I was for Maiden, heading there from Amorphis. Admittedly, Maiden are British and those were UK shows, so that might play into it somewhat. It would've been cool to catch a bit of ATG or Exodus, but that Sunday evening was just too stacked with good stuff (that Sunday in general tbh, there was definitely a big imbalance in terms of bands I was interested in on Sunday compared to Saturday)

In HF's case, that's non-metal people coming just to be "part of it" because it seems Hellfest has become kind of a 'place to be' in France, and HF marketing and communication this year seem to have targeted this kind of 'audience' (something that I was blissfully unaware of, focused on the bill as I was). So your experience kind of goes in that direction. Myself, after that fantastic At The Gates show, I wandered a bit on the grounds, and found people headbanging and cheering, just like one would expect. Oh well... Anyway, while I'll talk about that in the report (btw, PM me if you have stuff to say  ), I can already say that ATg were fantastic, Exodus too, even if I left to catch a bit of Amenra (fantastic too)As for me, thankfully, bands were relatively spread out on the three days

Written by Darkside Momo on 26.07.2018 at 01:33 I hadn't actually heard that about the 'tourists', but I was slightly shocked to hear it was the biggest festival in France, full stop, so it would make sense that some people going there are just going to a festival rather than for the music on display. I didn't notice it too much, but I think most festivals general are at least partially attended by people just wanting a festival experience rather than being set on seeing the bands on display I can contribute if you want to the article! Otherwise I was just gonna post my own experiences in the comments of the articles. I just went back and looked at the running order, there were 5 bands on Saturday I saw full sets of (Demilich, Oranssi Pazuzu, Ho99o9, Enslaved, and Neurosis), and then a few sets I dipped in and out of. I think there were like 7 on Friday, and then on Sunday it was like 10 or 11 (including the awesome Amenra show). The only real break I had on the Sunday after Tombs started was between Zeal and Ardor and Amorphis, by the end of Nightwish my feet and back were killing me!

And I guess you are right about people who are here "just for the fest". After all even amongst metalheads - you know the type, just bingedrinking from thursday to sunday...

Can't imagine spending hundreds of pounds to go to a festival with all those great bands and just get hammered all the time, seems like a colossal waste of time and opportunity
