Entombed + Cryptopsy, Toulouse, France, 11.12.2008 by Moocher (46) Entombed + Cryptopsy - Toulouse, France, 11.12.2008 by Jeff (35) |
Toulouse is a Metal place now, no doubt about it. For sure it's not really original to have Opeth or Sonata Arctica in a big French city but when bands like Entombed, Cryptopsy and their Death Metal mates start to come here, it means a lot for us as you can guess. This good change is due to three big factors. First the really good association Necrocosom moves its ass off to organize big shows. Secondly they're helped by the Havana Café venue which is always ok to organize Metal events, even little ones and finally it seems that people there start to come to the shows (and believe me it was really utopist to expect anything here 2 years ago). That's great really and that's great to see great concert like the one that we attended at the beginning of December. Death Metal with good bands always rock?
The concert began with the British young dudes of Trigger The Bloodshed. The show was really short and the guys didn't find the way to convince the few people who were already there so early in the evening. The thing is that their Death metal was really violent but also really basic without any real technical stuff in their compositions. It was not easy or fun to play at this hour because not a lot of people were present in the venue but all in all it was just a bit too messy to be really convincing. The guys were not bad though but their music still need improvements to become more effective. It was not a bad moment but sadly I didn't see any difference between the songs?
The second combo was Ignominious Incarceration also from UK and like their mates of Trigger The Bloodshed they didn't have the chance to play in front of a lot of people? In addition of this problem I wasn't really impressed by the compositions of the combo which were also, like Trigger The Bloodshed, a bit boring. Again it was a problem of originality, it was just too classic and basic to entertain me but I suppose that the ones who wanted brutal Death Metal were happy to see them. Let's hope that they will be able to find a way to do something a bit more original and complex in the future, that way I'm sure that I will be a bit more surprised by their future live performances.
With Beneath The Massacre we clearly changed of musical level and finally we had really good guitars soli. Of course it was still Death Metal but the guys from Quebec (who spoke to us in French of course), like a lot of Canadian Death Metal bands played something complex and technical and the growing crowd of the Havana seemed to enjoy a lot the concert. I'm not saying that it was the best show of the evening but I liked what they played and finally I "understood" what was happening there. I didn't know Beneath The Massacre before today but what I listened to at the Havana Café convinced me to listen to their albums. I hope that I will see again this band in the future.
Obviously the Metalheads from Toulouse wanted to see Cryptopsy and Entombed and even if the Havana (which is a big venue of more than 1000 places) was not full, a lot more people were present to see the Canadian Death Metal monsters (we were around 300 people, same than in Paris?). And damn it was a big kick in our asses! First, all the ones who were disappointed by the last Cryptopsy album didn't hear any soft vocals during the show. It was only pure fucking violence with an impressive (as always) Flo Mounier playing incredible fast drumming. It was good Death with a lot of old songs and with an impressive musical demonstration.
Despite what people can think the new members were all really good to play old stuff and everybody in the venue agreed on the fact that the Canadian machine impressed everybody with its blasting Death Metal. It was the first time that I saw the band live but I only want to see them again and I hope that they will play at some festival next year. The Cryptopsy concert was definitely one of the best shows that I saw lately. Wow!
Even if I was extremely happy to see Cryptopsy live, I have to tell you that I came there to see one of my favorite bands, Entombed. It was the second time that I saw the band and one more time it was an incredible experience for me. This band simply rocked again and obviously the guys were extremely happy to play this (too short) show. Evidently the played new songs like "When In Sodom" or "Serpent Saints" which both were really cool to listen to. But of course the band also played old stuff from the Left Hand Path album or killer songs like "Chief Rebel Angel". It was groovy as hell one more time and the band despite its really Rock n Roll attitude (beers and stuff like that you know what I mean) was extremely charismatic.
The band had to stop the show early due to fact that the venue turned into a club after midnight (to organize the "most beautiful student" contest? : )but it was great to see the guys who stayed on stage during more than ten minutes after their last song (without any encore?) talking to the metalheads, giving picks and joking about the stupid dance music that we were able to listen to after the show (yes it was crazy really?). Despite the length of the show (which wasn't the wish of Entombed as you know now) we had an excellent catchy and groovy performance and I will be happy to see them again at Hellfest 2009.
A good concert full of Death Metal bands never hurts (except if you attend it in the middle of the pit) and it was a great pleasure to attend this event. Metalheads were there, cool bands too, we didn't need anything else. I really hope that you'll have the chance to see one of those bands in the future and if they come to your city, don't be silly and go to the venue as soon as possible (especially to see Entombed).
Many thanks to Etienne and Necrocosm for the accreditation! Keep the good work in Toulouse!
