- Hi Matt, first, congratulation for your first album "Shape". Let met ask you this unoriginal but above all obligatory first question. Who is Dynamic Lights, who are the guys behind the band?
Hi Jeff thank you for your review. Dynamic Lights are a very united combo, friends who love the same kind of music and share the same passion for it. We play together since 1997 and the line-up is composed by: Me (vocals), Marco Poderi (guitars), Raffaele Mariotti (bass), Simone Del Pivo (drums) and Giovanni Bedetti Keyboards.
- Tell me, for the ones who don't know you yet, how can you describe the music of Dynamic Lights?
It's always difficult to find the right terms to describe your music, I think you can say a delicate progressive rock with the powerful touch of metal, but believe me it is just a general description because every listener can find different elements and shades on our music. It's also hard for me to describe it, we just follow what we feel during the composition so we don't start a song deciding what kind of genre our music must be till the end.
- I'm not the only one I suppose who compare your music to the one of the masters of Prog Metal that are Dream Theater or Pain Of Salvation. Are they your main influences? (maybe that you're also influenced by Jazz, Blues, Classical music etc?)
Yes of course you can use those bands, that is helpful to let people understand better our "kind" of music, but at the same time they are not our main influences. Everyone gets inspiration from his own roots and background, so you can hear for example classic style from the piano's parts, or jazz and fusion style from the drum etc.. The key of our music is a mix of different musical experiences and the freedom that everyone has during the composition. You are always glad when you are compared to great bands but you always prefer to sound original and make your own music.
- Can you present your first album "Shape"? Who are the main compositors for the music and the lyrics, how do you process to write an album?
Shape is our first Full length, we recorded it in Fear Studio, and it is distributed worldwide through our label DVS Records. The album contains 8 songs, for for a total listening time of about 60 minute. The artwork, the lyrics and the music contribute to the idea of this project and each part is important for the final result, so we paid a lot of attention to every aspect of it. There is no main compositor, the whole band works into the writing process. A song can start from an idea and then everyone gives his own touch and part to develop it. As I said before, we don't write songs, deciding all from the beginning, we just follow our emotions and what we feel at that moment, without any particular barriers.
- What are the topics of the songs on this album? Do you have any message (political or ecological for example) or do you only play music and consider it like an art above all?
Of course the music, like the artwork and the lyrics are all part of Art. They are united and well mixed, but we don't consider one aspect more important than another one. That's why lyrics has the same important role as music and artwork. Regarding topics of the songs there is not a particular one. Each song can describe an emotion coming from a dream or a reality fact, so far we haven't written any particular politacal message, but who knows maybe in the future we can consider also that.
- If I'm not wrong, you did a duet with the Swedish singer Jamina Jansson on the classy "In the hands of a siren". Who is she? and how did you come to work with her? Why?
Jamina Jansson is a great singer, I discovered her in a Wolverine's album, a swedish progressivemetal band. The first time I heard her voice I felt really excited thinking about a possible duet with her. When we wrote the song "In the hands of a Siren" I said: "this is exactly her song", so I contacted my friend Stefan (Wolverine's member) and I asked him if this could be done (he is also his boyfriend). They were both happy to collaborate with us, and the final result is what you've heard!
- How did you come to work with the Dutch label DVS? Are you happy of your collaboration?
We are really satisfied with our label, it is a small but a really good label I think! We had different offerings before DVS, but after few conversations with Rene Janssen, we decided to work together for the release of Shape, so we joined DVS records. Rene knew about us, when we decided to send a cd for the ProgPower selections; being one of the people who listened and selected the bands, he had a good impression of us, so he decided to contact us and discuss about DVS.
- Maybe that I'm wrong but I have the feeling that the Prog Metal scene is growing these days. We have a lot of really nice releases and a lot of listeners. Do you know why? (In my opinion, I think that your music can touch a lot of people even the ones who don't listen to Metal exclusively and it certainly helps a lot.)
Yes I also think that prog metal scene is growing. It's difficult to know the reason why it happens but I think that the entry of a lot of new good bands in this scene has really helped to spread this music even to those listeners who aren't too well accustomed to listen it. I consider our music really various and probably this, as you said, can help us to have various listeners who can also be not exlusively into metal.
- I know that you'll play at the Prog Power Europe in October. Honestly is it not like a dream to play in this kind of great festival? Talking about a dream, where would you like to play (festival or venue or country) and with which band(s)?
Yes you are completely right, for me is really like a dream comes true! I consider Prog Power festival one of the biggest and well organized progressivemetal festival in Europe. You can have unknown bands with well known bands and this is just amazing.
This year we will play together with Pain Of Salvation and Wolverine and many more and this is simply great!
Talking about dreams it will be really cool to make a tour in USA or Australia together with our new friends Voyager, another crazy DVS band!
- How is the Metal Scene in Italy? Do you have some good, but yet unknown, Italian Progressive bands that we will have to check in the future (maybe that you have some
other musical projects too?)
Yes the metal scene in Italy is quite good, Italy is well known for bands such as: Rhapsody, Lacuna Coil, Labyrinth etc.. In the progressive metal scene a lot of new bands are coming out: DGM, Mind Key, Exawatt and Empty Tremor and of course Dynamic Lights. In the past we had a lot of progressive rock italian bands like PFM, Area and many more who did and are still receiving great success all over the world, we hope to do the same.
- How will be the future of Dynamic Lights? Can we expect a new album soon, are you already working on it or do you want to play live above anything else?
This is really a million dollar question, first of all I wish all the best for this album and I hope the future will deserve all good things for it, that's why we will continue to promote our cd the best way is possible. At the same time we are writing new songs and we hope to have soon enough material to think about a possible new release. To play live is one of the greatest things for a band, one of the most important part of the band's life, for this reason we will try to play as many gigs as possible to let people hear our music and enjoy it in live version.
- My last question, what do you think of Internet regarding your band and the Metal in general? Are you afraid of the Mp3 exchanges for example? Or do you think that it is a "magical" new promotional means, and in that case, what do you think of the Metal Webzines (who I hope will help you a lot for your career)?
I think internet is amazing, and you have to take both sides, the good and the bad ones. Any sort of promotion is good for a band to let the people know who you are. We are not afraid of Mp3 exchanges nowadays it's impossible to keep in the cd stores what you have done. I just think that who really loves the music and wants to discover also the other aspects of a band like the artwork lyrics and more have to buy an album. Sometimes it is good to try before you buy something, and Internet can be seen as an instrument to do that in this way.
- Oki dude, thank a lot for your answers, I wish you good luck and I hope to see you one day in France. Feel free to say what you want say to the Metalstorm's readers, and may the force be with you (that's a trend these days then? ) Ciao !!!
