Tim Lambesis didn't keep the band's fans waiting, as thirteen months is not so long considering today's metal standards. On the other hand, how long does it take to write nine metalcore songs, because this is the number of premiere pieces on this double-disc release. Yeah, I'm aware that one CD is comprised of cover songs, but come on! The first disc doesn't even last 30 minutes, and out of thirteen songs four are short skits. Seems like he didn't have many ideas, but fuck it, this is not progressive metal, Austrian Death Machine are all about fun so let them be judged in this category.

Okay, so let me focus on the first part of this album. We get to hear 25 minutes and 12 seconds of the very same type of metalcore as on the debut album. I mean, I don't think anybody expected them to change the musical direction, but I thought it would be good to point it out just to make everybody 100% sure. The songs are maintained on the same level as on Total Brutal, which means that they are well-constructed, rich in breakdowns and lacking in goofy clean-sung choruses. Good for a few listens, but nothing more. However, I still think this band has got to be amazing live, you simply can't ruin the potential of this music on concerts. Of course, Tim Lambesis and two Ahhhnolds of his decided to record a couple of humorous skits with the same replace-the-snare-with-a-gunshot type of jokes. If you want to laugh really hard, this is not the CD to listen to, but it'll make you smile once or twice.

The second CD consists of covers and some more skits. I particularly liked the Terminator theme sung by the Governor himself. Austrian Death Machine didn't not surprise with the choice of songs, as they are mostly classics. Just look at the names: Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth or Motorhead. The band didn't change much, their versions are better produced and vocals were replaced with growling and some additional singing by Arnold. To be honest, I'd rather have them to write one or two original songs more than listen to the aforementioned bands' covers for the 100th time.

To sum up, Double Brutal is very much like its predecessor, Total Brutal - metalcore in a form digestible not only for the die-hard fans of the genre. Good fun and I guess it was the main purpose of Tim Lambesis & Co.
