05. Hvare
06. Aban
Haailing from Spaain we have AATHMA, aa post stoner doom trio.
Their third full-length, Avesta is a bit of a concept album. Named after a collection of ancient Persian texts, each song on the album represents one of the rites:
Mah (the Moon)
Mithra (Solar God)
Atash (the Great Fire)
Ken Za (Exorcism)
Hvare (the Sun)
Aban (the Waters)
Bitter (Green Clovers)
and
COld (Blue Diamonds)
Okay, maybe not the last two? those just might be my favorite Lucky Charms, they're magically delicious.
Speaking of magically delicious, AATHMA churn out a swell blend of post-stonerdoom jams that at times conjure up Kyuss ("Mithra"?) , other times a little more forcefully driven. Showing even more breadth, "Ken Za", the exorcism, is a pretty chill and entrancing little instrumental piece. All of this topped with the moving 11 minute closer, "Aban" which winds its way bouncing from chugging riffs to crashing crescendo before descending into more mellow moments before arising again.
Stylistically while you can pick out the band's influences here and there, they construct some pretty interesting tunes with enough variation to keep the listener interested. Some great chugging riffs, some swell "everyone pound on your instrument" sessions. The clean vocals work well within the shifting mix.
So while AATHMA won't get straight AA's for creating a new genre/sub-genre, they do get good marks for crafting an entertaining album. If you're into stoner/doom/sludgy-ish stuff, definitely worth aa listen.
