I had a friend that took pride in the fact that, beside some early childhood sickness, he never actually puked before. I thought he was missing out. It's one of the more intense bodily functions available. Today I tell you all the same: Puke away!

The Dutch Last Days Of Humanity is one of the longest running goregrind acts around, forming as early as 1989. They certainly have had an interesting career. The first two albums, The Sound Of Rancid Juices Sloshing Around Your Coffin and Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration, are hailed as classic, underground gems of the genre. If you can call a putrid corpse a gem, of course. The vivid album/song titles and seriously disgusting artworks cemented their status and clearly left a mark on many bands that try to produce a similar type of revolting music. Somewhere along the line, they began to flirt more and more with noise, to the point of being infamously hard to listen to or take seriously. This is especially true with their third album Putrefaction In Progress. It was a test of endurance. An absurd and grotesque display of wrongness where all the elements of their music were put in a blender, consumed and then puked into the recording room with a tin-can-quality snare drum on top that's just ridiculous. But hey, at least it gave me one of my favorite YouTube videos of all time.

But now they are back, 15 years later, with some line-up changes and leaving only the singer Hans Smits as a remaining founding member. They did resurface from the filthy sludge of human excrements back in 2019 and 2020 with some shy and short EPs, but they felt half-baked and unremarkable. Was it possible to come back in full, nauseating glory?

Short answer: Yes. The artwork says it all. It's more disturbing than disgusting or gore, but it retains the dreadful, unpleasant tone of the previous ones. It's also much darker and all of this can be applied to the music too. In just 22 minutes they bombard the listener with violent, old-school riffs that envelope you with their acid stench and ultra-low vocals that sound like a faulty toilet drain. The natural sound of the drumming is a more than welcomed change. The return of the groovy, down-tuned riffs place this album closer to the first two while the obscenely gargling growls recall some of the noisy, monstrous qualities of their over-the-top third album. But the mixing places the vocals slightly below the riffs and drum work, giving them more room to breathe. The use of samples also adds to the morbid tone of the record, while also adding well-needed pauses. It's hard to use the word "mature" for such vile and seemingly unappealing music, but Horrific Compositions of Decomposition sees Last Days Of Humanity achieving a balanced sound that remains so fucking relentless and hideous. Welcome back, you rancid gentlemen!
