It is quite telling that, even after seven albums, Incite is still largely referred to as "Max Cavalera's son's band", rather than the band that released "x". Still struggling to break free of this long shadow cast over them, Savage New Times does not see the band emerge from this shadow; it instead highlights why they continue to be under its pall.
Savage New Times is an OK album, enjoyable enough while it plays out, but unremarkable in its lasting impact on you and leaves you with little urge to relisten to it. Incite are more than competent in their playing, but they lack the songwriting quality to really stick out beyond this. When listening to tracks like "Chucked Off", you are left with a groove/metalcore-like hybrid that is well played, but nothing about it really sticks with you once the track ends and the next one starts.
Often, it is actually the low points that are the most memorable, be it the poor choruses to "Lies" and "Feel This Shit (I'm Fired Up)" to the deranged verse vocals on "Just A Rat" sounding like Cavalera is surprised to read his own lyrics as he sings them (Serj Tankian must feel the same when singing "I-E-A-I-A-I-O"). Although too few in number to turn the fortune of the album around, there are some tracks that are decent enough, with the title track and "No Mercy No Forgiveness" being pleasant listens.
Savage New Times's production sets the mood from the off, with it being competent but sterile, with no character or grit to any of the tracks. Again, it's not bad, but it does little to help the album establish much identity among the sea of new releases. Although, to lay this squarely at the production's feet is misguided; even the best production wouldn't really raise the quality of the album much.
Savage New Times is more likely to raise your shoulders in a shrug than your horns; a well played batch of middling songs that feels like the colour grey, with only occasional flecks of colour to catch your attention. Nothing will actively make you hit skip, but little will make you hit the back button to hear something over again.
