It's amazing looking back that Biohazard didn't ride the nu metal wave of the late 90s/early 00s to bigger things, instead being dragged down deep under the ocean of the omnipresent genre and faded from view. After two decades spent jumping between being active and inactive, the band's classic line-up seem to have become a going concern once more, culminating in their first new release in thirteen years, Divided We Fall.
Divided We Fall sees the classic line-up return to their roots, producing an album that feels like a continuation of their 90s output, when the band were at their peak. Never ones to shy away from speaking their minds, the intervening years have provided Biohazard with ample inspiration, which the band spin into gold on several tracks. While Divided We Fall starts off slowly, the album does pick up in quality, with a particularly strong mid-section.
Like wading into cold water, if you can wait it out and acclimatise, you'll adjust to it after some time. Once "Word To The Wise" kicks in, the aggression ramps up and Biohazard click once more. It's not all-out aggression, however, as tracks like "S.I.T.F.O.A." have an old school punk vibe to them that highlight one of Biohazard's lasting legacies, namely their ability to appeal to metalheads and punks in equal measure. This is the case on "The Fight To Be Free", a metallic take on punk that will see you headbang before holding on for dear life as it kicks up a gear.
Perhaps what is most surprising is how the classic line-up are able to pick up where they left off (though, to be fair, this is their second crack at this reunion album thing after Reborn In Defiance), with much of Divided We Fall sounding like they can mentally transport themselves back to the 90s and evoke the same chemistry. As Biohazard will often sing about, however, this is real life and not a fairytale, so it's somewhat fitting that Divided We Fall is not the fairytale magical album to mark the band's return.
While the band are faithful to their original style, the intervening years in both age and stylistic shift do shine an unfortunate spotlight on the album and its contents. Tracks like "Fuck The System" and "Death Of Me" feel like they could have been lifted straight off of Urban Discipline; however, they lack the energetic performance of the band's peak to nail the execution. The worst one, however, is the closing "Warriors", which is a mess of effects, a chorus that is painfully bad and a structure that will make you question if ideas were pulled from a hat and glued together as one.
Had Divided We Fall come out in the late 90s, perhaps the career of Biohazard would have took a different path than it ultimately did. Now it's a case of the band still having the same chemistry and songwriting qualities, but being let down by the ability to match their earlier exuberance.
