Like any piece of art, it's important to build context for this record, the sixth full-length studio album from this monumental extreme metal band. Sepultura was hot on the heels of their fifth album, Roots, a metal record that achieved gold status in eight countries in 1996. This was a watershed moment for these Brazilian musicians, but when one of their major players and founding members, Max Cavalera, left the band after that release, Sepultura was left with a glaring hole in their roster.

Enter: Derrick Green, a seasoned vocalist in the American hardcore scene. Would he be able to fill the shoes of Max Cavalera? Time would tell, and Against would be his first outing with this commercially successful metal act.

Against pulls back from the nu metal grooving that was introduced on Roots. Core members like Andreas Kisser and Igor Cavalera probably realized that Roots went a bit too hard in the paint, showcasing too many rap/nu metal tendencies where there were once well-suited, mid-paced thrash tendencies, as exhibited on their monumental record Chaos A.D.. In an effort to course correct, Against ropes in the groove to showcase a hard and fast version of Sepultura while still being palatable to the expanding landscape of intense yet commercially viable metal music.

Trading in Brazilian tribal for Japanese folk music, Against is heavy on taiko drums, flutes, and a variety of guest musicians playing atypical instruments for this band that usually sounds like it crawled from the depths of the Amazon. Tracks like "Choke," "Boycott," and "Common Bonds" feature heavy riffing, percussion, and intense vocals from Green. But I imagine that old-school fans of the band look at tracks like "F.O.E" or "Kamaitachi" with some dismay.

All in all, this is a strange and unusual record for Sepultura. Regardless of its odd side steps, it is a genuine delivery from the lineup that would predominately inherit the Sepultura flag after Max's departure. It may have taken a while for Sepultura to find their footing again, but I find this to be an uncompromising, adventurous foray into a new epoch for this band, wrestling with commercial success and dramatic lineup adjustments.

Don't call it a comeback.

Good review

Nothing appeals me anything about this forgetful and passable record. It decimated the integrity of Sepultura embracing embryo of nu-metal culture. Wrong move.

As a first time listener to this record, I found it quite enjoyable. Not even close to being bad.

The overall sound has a certain charm as well.

Would I return to it in the future ? Probably not, but I revisit only a handful of Sepultura albums anyway.
