The two guys of Spiders & Snakes, Lizzie Grey and Timothy Jay, seems to be some of the last survivors of the Glam Rock clan and it seems that they always believe that this music is a synonym to future. On a side they are maybe right, Thrash Metal was like in hibernation until last year, then maybe that the same would happen with Glam Rock. But on the other hand, the last Thrash releases of Exodus, Death Angel etc was all masterpieces? and unfortunately that's not really the case of this "Hollywood Ghosts".
Actually this album is average really, you can have the best like the worst. A song like "American Baby" is really Rock'n'Roll the choruses and the melody are catchy, it clearly sounds Glam or Hard Rock à la Motley Crue if you want but it's not something really unpleasant to listen. Same with "Spiders & Snakes" with it's really bluesy melody (with a lot of Harmonica), it really sounds US, that's not bad at all if you like all the 80's, 90's bands of the West Coast? But at the opposite a song like "Siamese Twins" is a (I'm sorry to say that) pure pile of shit, uninteresting as hell, with a stupid chorus worthy of Noodle and his band mates of Offspring? and there are a lot of songs like this one on this album? that's scary? I know that's also the spirit and the part of fun of Glam rock, but that's a bit too much for me?
Lizzie Grey and Timothy Jay are not bad musicians, even if their vocals are not really the best of the style? Lizzie Grey knows ho to play good solos, Timothy Jay is a good drummer, they're maybe not some guitar heroes but they're ok. Also note that we have a guest appearance of Angelo Moore, saxophonist of Fishbone, who tries to put some spicy touches on two songs of the album.
The production of the album is the strong point of "Hollywood Ghosts", the recording is really professional, and you can even find a Bonus DVD with 15 videos live. The quality of the video is not always perfect but that's a good thing to add such stuff with an album, at least the fans are happy (if you have some fans) and the ones who don't know the band can learn a lot of things about them...
"Hollywood Ghosts" is just pale, I really think that our two dudes will have to find some others musicians maybe and try to do something new one day because the interest with this album is really limited. It can works if you're a diehard fan of the music, and even in that case I suppose that you have all the Motley Crue, Poison, XYZ and all these bands then?
