"Waiting for the dawn" is the first album from InnerWish. They originally started writing their songs for fun, but when they realized how good they were they decided to release them in this album. Unfortunately, the studio didn't have much time for them, so they had to do their recordings mostly late in the night. That's probably how the title of this album came out.
Due to this lack of interest from the studio, the production of the original record was quite bad. This destroyed the image of the album, since the guitars were far behind in the sound, giving an unpleasant feeling. Thankfully, the original record was only available for short time and nowadays it can be found remastered by R.D. Liapakis who did a really good job, giving this album the attention it deserved from the beginning. The new version also features a bonus track of the song Nightfall, one of the best of this record, a song that should have been included in the first version.
InnerWish have a sound that is quite original since at that time there weren't many bands (if any) playing this kind of music. It's a mix of 80's heavy metal with 90's power metal, but with powerful vocals making an innovating combination. The album has both vivid songs with great melodies, and some less happy and more loose, with a blend of melancholy. Yiannis Papanikolaou left his mark in the lyrics too, since the songs he wrote are in the spirit of Christianity. Soon after the release of the album, he left the band to devote his life to God, joining a monastery, where he formed his own rock band, in the same spirit with similar sound. Many people can recognize his voice here, since he gained (inter)national attention through his later works?
So this album is something different, in a good way. It's not another usual power metal album, but an interesting mix as mentioned above. I really enjoyed listening to it and I don't think I can get bored of it easily. I don't know if you'll ever have the chance to listen to this music, but if you ever see this album in the stores, buy it at once because you might never have the chance again. Currently there are some mp3s in the band's official site, but they don't represent the album's image and apart from that, they're from the first release with the lousy sound? Once again, don't miss this record!
