Funerarium is quite probably the first band from Luxembourg to reach my infernal eardrums. And as they say, the first impression is very important, the Black Metal scene of Luxembourg (is there any?) should not worry. "Nocthule", the second full-length by Funerarium is - while being everything but original - a more than decent release.

The coverart is very gritty, and shows a procession of wraiths in a forest. These wraiths remind me of the infamous Ku Klux Klan, but usually people in bedsheets tend to have that effect on me. Besides that similarity, the coverart, drenched in green shades, looks very good.

Musically, they offer ferocious fast-paced Norwegian styled Black Metal. They keep it simple and basic, and try to excel in atmosphere rather than complexity. Old school riffs, howling vocals with an echoing touch and a doomy feeling. Corpus Christii's latest album "Rising" evoked similar feelings.

In earlier reviews, I bashed bands who did nothing new into the ground, but this time I will not. The reason is that Funerarium has a certain energy, a 'sweat, blood and tears' attitude, or 'spirit', if you will, that convinced me of their good intentions. In the end, that is what matters to me most. If you disagree, simply ignore the rating and the band, but if you think like me, you would not be wasting your time checking it out.
