First of all I want to mention that I never focused to specific categories of the metal music. I always liked to listen to all of the metal genres from heavy to black, from folk to progressive, from power to gothic etc. My criteria are strongly related to the emotions and feelings a specific release can cause to me. I really believe in the "if you like it, listen to it" dogma!

I am not the biggest fun of Rotting Christ, but I have almost all of their work, and I have also been in several of their live shows at festivals. I really believe that this band is one of the few in metal that has the healthy evolution inside! Each of their release contains new elements that they really know how to embed without letting down their audience. They never make an album identical to a previous one. The combination of evolution and integrity to their style make this band respected by a wide metal audience no matter their extreme genre.

Beginning from the title of the album, "Theogonia" means "the birth of Gods" in Greek, which reflects actually to the content and the style. From the first song of the album, the music is really strong, melodic wherever the song demands it and without meaningless or useless exaggerations. This material is fresh. The diverse styles of choruses make the tracks epic but not repeating or tiresome.

The songwriting is really genius, the music progresses really nice and... yes this damn album has solos! Contrary to today's' metal trends, they do solos again, and it really adds to the album. Sakis' vocals remain mainly extreme and very nice as usual. Some nice variant distortions really fit perfect.

From the chaotic "The Sign Of Prime Creation" to the rhythmic "He, The Aethyr" and the genius "Rege Diabolicus" the whole album is a real masterpiece. I don't know if it is their best, but I have to admit that it is the only RC album that whenever I put it to my cd player I listen to the whole of it!

Quality, is what to expect before buying this album, and satisfaction is what to get after listening to it. I strongly recommend this album to people that do not listen to this kind of metal because it has many things that makes it worth listening to it.

I must admit, I was very sceptical about this album before I heard it, and about the band in general. Translated to English, my scepticism would sound like this: "A Greek Black Metal band? Pfft, crap! That's reserved for Norwegians and other Scandinavians! For Christ's sake (notice the irony about Christ), these guys don't even wear corpse-paint!" From the very 1st minute of playing Theogonia, I realised how very wrong I was. Not only is it great, but it has certain innovations I never heard in Black Metal.

I also agree, especially with the second paragraph. This band do has a healthy evolution and may I say Theogonia was definately one of top 2008 for me. Great ass kicking album!

You think darkness is your ally? You merely adopted the dark. I was born in it. Molded by it. I didn't see the light until I was a man. But it was nothing to me but blinding.

I recently bought the original album. I really think this band can only excel, I do see an evolution there like you said and they were brave, they released a few "gothic" albums" that a lot of people didn't like and they sticked to their own ideas. I think they are stronger than ever and theogonia has one of the best RC songs ever "Rege Diabolicus".

My favourite songs on the album shift a bit and now it's the last songs from the album that I'm enjoying more.

I can only hope that they continue to make great music like they've been doing since "Thy Mighty Contract".

Almost perfect album, the best in their discography imo. The only low point is that I truly expected that the album had much more to do with Hesiod's ''Theogony''

Nice album, nice review.
One thing: I'd gave it a 9 for originality. Everything's original by Rotting Christ to me.(or almost everything)
