Favorite Albums Of 2014

1.Disentomb - Misery - Far and away the best album of the year. This rivals Katalepsy's Autopsychosis for the most brutal, devastating riffage in the genre. It's creative, precise, and strongly fulfills the atmosphere set by the album cover. I feel like I'm wading in hell among throngs of tormenting entities as I'm pummeled relentlessly by elite riff sections, massive gutturals, and near-perfect production. The choices of chords often take the music to another level. It doesn't get much better than this.
2.Infecting The Swarm - Pathogenesis - Probably not for everyone, but the intense and slicing guitar sections are simply amazing in the most subtle of ways. Not overly dynamic or inventive but hits the sweet spot in futuristic atmosphere meets massively ripping guitars. Vocals are good and songs are catchy and memorable. Only downside are the programmed drums, which normally would cause me to chuck this off the list but not in this case. It all blends seamlessly. Masterful work, at times, and I can't wait to hear what's next from this band.
3.Cerebral Effusion - Idolatry Of The Unethical - Chunking, ripping, crushing smashing, pounding brutal death. You can feel the sickness. The overall sound is amazing.
4.Septical Gorge - Scourge Of The Formless Breed - Inventive guitars, awesome technical musicianship and dynamism. Awesome production and elaborate song structures.
5.Omnihility - Deathscapes Of The Subconsious - Some of the most interesting and intense guitars pervade this album but there will be no wankery here - it's all in blindingly fast, mind-numbing riffs. Very cool songs and ideas and this band has a tremendously high ceiling. Not much out there like this. Guitarist is known for his 'gravity-picking' technique, which allows many of the songs to break BPM sound-barriers.

Best Albums Of 2014

Could just as easily be titled "My Favorite Albums Of 2014"...and since my favorite genres are mostly BDM and other death metal derivatives, that's what you'll see.

Top Brutal Death And Slam Albums 7/18/2012

Here are my favorite albums from the death metal subgenres in the title. Each offers something special and deserves attention for being in my view among the best I've heard. I listen to every brutal death or slam album I can find. These are, in my opinion, the best of the best.

Most are in recent years as the subgenres are relatively new. If a band could be categorized simply as death metal, I've generally left them off this list. These bands fit firmly within the BDM and/or Slam realms. This leaves out bands like Skinless, Pyrexia, or even Krisiun who all can be called BDM by some and just DM by others. This list should offer a doorway to some great bands and albums for new fans and old of the genres involved. It's hard to keep track of them all.

Best Brutal Death/Slam Albums the Past 5 Years

Here are my favorite Brutal Death Metal, Technical Brutal Death Metal, and Slam Death Metal albums as of 3-31-2012. I've limited my list to releases over the last 5 years, though most will be recent releases. If you like the genres included in this list, these are albums that I think are absolute must-haves. They are simply my favorite. Some are raw, up-and-coming acts while others are more proven, established bands. The bottom line is: these are the best albums I've found under the umbrella of the 3 genres I've mentioned. I'll attempt to leave out (intentionally) some of the more recognizable names that I feel fit into the Death Metal category better than the three I mentioned, such as Dying Fetus or Severe Torture. I want to feature lesser-known bands that really push the boundaries into the most brutal territories of Death Metal. For now, top-15 to top-20 is likely where I'll cut this off, but I may add more as I realize some may have been missed or simply newly found.
