This is one of the most respected albums in Black Metal History, Why is that? Beats me actually, but I can assure you this album is uncommon and very original for the genre it stands for, the music is aggressive and very raw, the execution towards this album is not complex or actually talented, but it's multi-faceted and layered, I think this album deserves all the credit it has, now lets take a closer view...

Whenever one thinks of the term "black metal," they almost instantly think of Mayhem and their magnum opus, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. Why is that?

Legendary album, but in early archaic church burning BM bands has nothing to worship it. Todays BM is much better, I cant deny roots, but I didnt like it in 20's now I dislike it even more, Fen, Immortal, Wolchant, and so many other bands are much better in all.

Yeah you can really hear Mayhem's influence in Fen.

Except for Mayhem. I get pretty annoyed sometimes for how much praise the band gets only for their cult status compared to the last 2 albums. I can't stress enough how much I love DMDS but Ordo ad Chao and Esoteric Warfare are an accomplishment on their own, a step forward for modern BM. In terms of sounding absolutely sinister, there are not many bands that can do that (see: Funeral Mist).
The last 2 are where it really is!

This. As far as I'm concerned Mayhem basically invented a new way to play black metal with Ordo. It's still unique to this day (outside of Esoteric Warfare to a degree) and as such still holds up to this day in how effective and brilliant it is. They're pretty much the greatest black metal band from the original lot for the reasons you outlined. I'm always amazed when I see the occasional person crop up saying that they're overrated or what have you.

A lot of bands copied/expanded on the sound that DsD (and Ved Buenes Ende to a certain extent) created but I haven't heard a single band that sounds like this or this.

Interesting riffs and a uniquely dark atmosphere ruined by unintelligible silly grunts that destroy my immersion.

The irony of rating Inquisition's work as some of the best black metal has to offer isn't lost on me.

This is an excellent album. Really atmospheric. Horror-like with touch of Gothic or Baroque mood... It mixes orthodox BM with avant-garde BM approach. It is very nicely produced as well. A milestone.

This was my introduction to Black metal, I was only 4 when it was released so unfortunately I missed out on the Norwegian Black Metal scence at the time.

I heard the stories and history behind this legendary album, so it got me interested, and the music did not disappoint me, I still like it to this day, it has a unique sinister atmosphere, one of which I had never experienced in metal before, the vocals are haunting and give me the chills, the bass sound is also a highlight for me as well as the ultra fast blast beat drumming, there is also some quality riffs here too, like on "Freezing Moon".

The title song remains my favourite song on the album, it's breathtaking, "Life Eternal" is also one of my favourites too.

Yeah. Great riffs and awesome drumming... but the vocals ruin it for me.

Edit: I can appreciate the vocal style now. He sounds like a haunting ghost

I agree with you. Can't stand Attila's vocals as of right now, maybe I grow to like it with time... Anyhow I prefer Freezing Moon with Dead singing by a mile. Wish he lived long enough to sing on this album... Too bad.

Well I would say this is the most iconic album from the 2nd wave, I don't think it's the only good thing to come from the 2nd wave, but it's a genre that is certainly not to everyone's taste.

No. Admittedly, I have not really dived deeply into 2nd wave. I checked the major names (darkthrone, mayhem, burzum, immortal etc) and all of their albums ranged from garbage to average for me, with the exception of this one.

Most of what I listen to is black metal. However, I seem to be able to enjoy its modern, more experimental manifestations.
There are, of course, simplistic ambient/ atmo black metal records I love, but they, too, are released post-2000 with production that is perfected for the style. I guess neither the production nor the songwriting of 2nd wave suits me.

This has grown on me! Revisiting this after 4 months, I must say that I enjoy this a lot! I wasn't so keen on the vocals at first (a common stumbling block for me, especially regarding black metal). But now I think it fits very well with the album. While Dead's vocals were more intense and powerful, Attila's vocals perfectly capture here the haunting, cold, despairing atmosphere of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas.

As for the album itself, every instrument works together perfectly: the guitar-work creates this great immersive atmosphere, while also occasionally providing headbangable riffs and faster sections to keep the listener engaged; the bass is pretty audible on some tracks, making songs like the title track even more eerie; and the super fast and complex drumming I find really extraordinary!

My favorite songs here are Freezing Moon, Life Eternal, and Funeral Fog. I also really like the lyrics on From the Dark Past and the riffs on Curse in Eternity and the super fast Pagan Fears. The Latin incantations on the title track are also a nice touch

Overall, this is one of the best black metal releases I've heard; I rate it between an 8 and a 9. As one of the albums that started the 2nd wave of black metal in Norway, this will do nicely as a start to my further exploration of pure black metal bands like Darkthrone, Burzum, Dimmu Borgir, and others. Stay tuned!

Yeah, right? Hellhammer is a beast in this album.
A funny thing is that whenever I speak about the drumming here, there is always some drum connoseur who pops in and says stuff like "bruh, this isn't even hard, you should listen to Rush or some shit". Well, I don't know much about drums, but I do know about my ears. The drumming sounds really intense and complex and that's enough for me =)

Good to know you liked it. This is by far one of the best bm albums for me. Mostly because of Attila's vocals.

Varg was an incredibly underappreciated bass player, the bass lines he played on "Life Eternal" were legendary.

Kinda happy they wren't able to erase the bass track for the sake of music. It really goes to show how great of a musician was Varg.

It took me forever to appreciate this album but I came back to it time and time again and in the end something just clicked.

Received a new purple vinyl copy in the post and it sounds lovely. Those older analogue recordings just sound so much better than the made for digital vinyl pressings you hear on a lot of newer releases.

This album is amazing. Freezing moon, pagan fears and the title tracks are the best tracks in the album but i don't like buried by time and dust. The drums are absolutely the best part in this album along with the solo in the freezing moon plus Attila's voice feels like a ghost singing. It's amazing.
