When "For Broken Words", Construct's opener, was first previewed, reactions were mixed, to say the least - and that's only natural given the weird, mid-tempo nature of this song. Then we got a classical Dark Tranquillity song ("The Science Of Noise", a future live anthem to be sure), and a mellow song with clean vocals ("Uniformity"). Varied album? Indeed! So, how's the rest? Well, screaming 'masterpîece' is obviously a case of blind fanboyism, but talking about 'pure crap' is totally a prejudiced, off-the-mark vision; as usual (and especially with an album like this one) the answer lies in the silence in between (ah ah).

Personally, I Love it. I don't get why the word 'Masterpiece' is being thrown around, but to each their own

This whole thing about defining Melodeath or Gothenburg metal is only mental masturbation guys ! Say you hate or dislike this album but don't try to justify your choice using such arguments. After a few spins, I have to say I've really got into this album and I really like it, in spite of its lack of brutality but hey we're talking about DT, not Behemoth or Marduk ^^

Just waiting for a decent price to try and get hold of the US version so that I can enjoy 2 bonus tracks that seem non existent in the Euro version

I got my hands on the US edition and 'Immemorial' is amazing!

what Joe said. Totally generic it does sound but still clearly it sounds as Dark Tranquillity and imo nothing like AMon Amarth

There's no common point bewteen Amon Amarth and Dark Tranquillity... But so far, the new tracks of Amon Amarth I could listen to didn't impress me anyway... Not looking forward the new album, tho I will also give it a try (guess it shoud leak out any moment now ^^)

Not very familiar with the band or the genre. Only thing in my collection I can compare it to is Amon Amarth. This album kinda intrigues me, I like the electronica usage!

Lyrical observation here:

DT in 2005,
"Look at the shell that is you
Empty, fragile, weak
Soon the battle is over
Lost to apathy"

DT in 2013,
"Sometimes I feel
What silence best describes
Sometimes I feel
Apathetic to this life"

What are they trying to say? >:D

Beautiful it is, I think it's the best track on the album, followed by None Becoming, simply due to the impact even though it's a very dark.

What Only You Know stays pretty simple in the song structure, but it's still the best written song if you ask me, really effective and seems to deliver exactly what it was meant to. I love it!

I agree with you on that. And "None Becoming" is another one of the good tracks on the album. Too bad that most of the other songs verge on just okay for me. The album lacks consistency as a whole.

Definitely : ( I think the only way to really enjoy this album is to force yourself to listen to it from beginning to end, or to pick out the two we mentioned in particular. By putting Apathetic and End Time Hearts on skip, I enjoy the entire album a lot. End Time Hearts really isn't that bad, whereas I consider Apathetic simply unbearable. Anyway..

The more I listen to this album, the more I like it ! I tend to prefer the mid paced songs better like "Uniformity", "That Only You know" and "State of Trust" but all tracks are nice. Besides, I can enjoy the 2 bonus tracks as I bought the CD from an American seller !

When I first watched the video shot for Uniformity I was excited for the coming album, but little did I know for it ended up to be the only song I liked on "Construct". All in all, for me this is the weakest album Dark Tranquilly has put out in all these years. Sadly.

Amazing album! Only loses to Cult of Luna's Vertikal this year.

A very weird comparision, they're totally different.

Both are music, so the comparison is valid

Of course, I like Chuck Schuldiner's style more than Bach's and Jordan Rudess's playing than Beethoven's.

Didnt notice how my post was so disruptive looool. Every year I write down my top 20 metal albuns of the year (I have to as I write for a portuguese website). I dont listen to so many albuns from different sub genres to make a top for every genre of metal like it is done here at metalstorm. And as the months go by, my top2 (Cult of Luna and Dark Tranquillity) remains the same

And on the opposite edge of opinions I think I've listened to this even more than Character, which was definitely my favourite before this album. This band offers a little something for everyone I guess

Thats a step in the right direction comparing it with "we are the void". half of the songs are great though i didnt like the slower songs at all. what only you know and the science of noise are the best imo..

Listened to this last night again and thought it inferior to just about anything they've ever done.

I looked at the inlay card and figured out the problem - a lot of the songs were written by the keyboardist Martin Brändström and drummer Anders Jivarp and not by the guitarists. The two stand out songs IMO are Apathetic and Endtime Hearts, both of which are written by guitarist Niklas Sundin. I checked the inlay cards of the other albums and the songs were generally written by Sundin and Henriksson (bass/guitar).

Henriksson was burned out and simply couldn't come up with anything. If the album was full of songs like you mentioned, you probably would've found it pretty boring as well because of no guitar solos or dynamic keyboard passages.

Ugh... I hate special region-based bonuses. Just make a fucking "special" edition next to your regular edition that is available everywhere, instead of just adding bonus content for USA (or Japan, or where-ever). Now I have to import one of them albums via ebay. I should just boycot bands that pull this kind of crap...

I'm pretty sure most bands do this to give back to regions that support them most (regarding live performances and album sales). That's why Arch Enemy cater to the Japanese with exclusive bonus tracks all the time. If more people take your stance and boycott these bands, they'll just continue providing other areas with exclusive content and you can listen solely to bands that don't ever make it big enough to have a "favored" audience in the first place.

It's also worth pointing out that these extra tracks are often rubbish. Or worse: covers.

boycot the label instead. Bands usually aren't behind this kind of "special editions" stuff. Labels do that where, as Troy mentioned, the band has a solid fanbase.

Sort of like a more mid-tempo Character. Luckily, Character is my favorite Dark Tranquillity album, so I love construct... though not as much as the aforementioned masterpiece. Quite honestly I think Character was about anger and Construct is more about depression, with Void serving as a gateway between the two.

Edit: I COMPLETELY forgot fiction... shows how memorable that particular one was to me.

I love DT but i find this album unlistenable.
I can't stand it. And I like everything they previously did.
The song structures and melodies don't seem to make musical sense to me whatsoever. Horrible transitions as well.
I don't know how else to explain it. Just very sloppy composition!

Revisiting this (and upping my rating) I don't understand why I found it so boring when it came out, and why it has such a bad rep. I think it is almost at the level of Atoma', kind of like a precursor to that album. Having been listening to DT heavily the last weeks, I think their three last albums are their most solid albums, as albums, except for Character. The others might have stronger individual tracks, but as whole albums, these three tell great stories!
