My first impressions of Allegaeon's new album, Elements Of The Infinite, were definitely strange. The album opens up an acoustic part, not all that strange in itself, but then morphs into this grandiose orchestral intro that sounds like the music to a God of War game with electric guitar arpeggios over it. Yikes...

By the way, I apologise for the arrogant reply earlier - I was being a dick. I was just appalled at how highly rated this album is and and when you replied...yeah.

You did come off as a dick a little, but that's besides the point. I don't feel listing my entire catalog of music, but I do have an extensive list. I've been involved with music for about 13 years so all I do is listen and study music.

As far as the recommended album you posted, it was okay. I have to admit that I am not a fan of Tech Death, and Ouroboros displays some of those qualities I don't like. It's a real love or hate thing for me, some albums sound good and some others sound like people stabbing notes into my ear. Ouroboros, very good musicians and the guitarist does shred, are not that inspiring to me, as far as my songwriting is concerned. Melody plays a part to me and Allegaeon were not short on it.

I went back and listened to the album and my stance has not changed. (Terrible analogy coming up) It's like a brick, if the surface is smooth and there are no chips in it, its a perfect brick. That's just how I feel about the album. I didn't say it was original, what is at this point? My ears liked what they heard, I thought it was good.

That's when people think it's O.K. to vote 1 to bring down the total mean of votes. I still can't believe people care that much about votes.

Yeah, this album is way dope. It's tech death with just a bit more melody than usual. I was REALLY surprised this morning to find it dropped all the way from an 8.7 to 8.36 basically overnight. Really, 4 one star reviews? This seems a bit skewed to me so.......

#1 Megadeath has ~2200 votes and only 16 of them are one star (~0.7% are 1 star votes) http://metalstorm.net/bands/rating.php?album_id=1118

The new insomnium has ~450 votes and only 2 are one star (~0.4% are 1 star votes)
http://metalstorm.net/bands/rating.php?album_id=75734

This album has 84 votes and 4 of them are 1 star (~4.7% are 1 star)
http://metalstorm.net/bands/rating.php?album_id=76698

It seems that these 1 star reviews popped up overnight, I seriously hope nobody's trying to get their friends to rate this down to prove that they have superior metal taste........ Maybe the mods should look into whether they all came up around the same time and appear to be in coordinated effort.

They must be deaf, either that or they can hear and didn't even bother to give the album a listen. on a more serious note, the whole rating thing has been fixated (when I say fixated, an unusual amount of 1's on albums that are nothing near as bad as Metallica - Lulu) - i've noticed it happening on a lot of other albums, recent and old. Worth keeping an eye out!

We don't go out of our way to research vote abuse, but when it's brought up by others we take action if necessary (as was the case here).

We also prefer album threads to be used for album discussion rather than ratings discussion but what can you do. When people get upset with ratings and chart placements they raise a stink about it.

Let's try to steer this topic back in the right direction. Feel free to discuss how great or awful it is regardless of what people rate it.

No idea. It's started happening again, though.

Really enjoyed this album, the instrumentation is extremely tight and solid and reminds me of a more experimental Sylosis at times. The lengthier tracks towards the end are brilliantly written, and the album is closed appropriately well with "Genocide for Praise". The three consecutive songs "Dyson Sphere", "The Phylogenesis Stretch" and "1.618" put me off a little because to me they were weaker than the album's opening two tracks, but for the most part this is a really consistent sound.

I definitely need to check this out soon. I keep hearing things about how melody-oriented they are, and that is the kind of stuff I really fall for.

Extensive...amounting to how much, approximately? I''m just curious. It's just that this makes me think otherwise:

Fair enough. Personally, the solos (and melodies) on this album come across as rather stale compared to those on Ouroboros' debut...or any decent tech death album for that matter.

Well All Shall Perish, Animals as Leaders, Between the Buried and Me, Cynic, Mastodon, Scale the Summit, Symphony X, Sylosis, The Contorionist, The Faceless, and The Saftey Fire (just naming bands on my phone right now). I Also like Obscura, The HAARP Machine, Gorod, Revocation, Sikth (excited that they are finally back together), Arsis, and some more others.

I could go all day, but those are the bands that come to mind. Like I said, I'm not that into Tech Death so I don't know to many bands. The releases I do like though usually are really good.

My inquiry was referring to your complete music collection, not limited to tech death bands. Just list it as days:hours:minutes.

A staff guy...
Allegaeon, Bloodshot Dawn and Ouroboros all play a similar style of melody/groove-driven tech death; take your pick of calling them either melodic tech death or technical melodeath, either one is apt.

I loved 'Fragments', the last one was quite disappointing. This one is better but I find the dropped guitar tuning (or 7th string) has displaced their sound. They do the catchy hook with intensity so well but I find the last 2 albums are jumbled and messy.

The album opener and closer are both excellent, making this a strong album, certainly much better than the latest Insomnium, which was bland and tedious in comparison. (Americans defeating Finns in metal is a rare occurrence indeed.)
