“The road has taken a lot of the great ones. […] It’s an impossible way of life.” – Robbie Robertson, The Last Waltz

Ever in search of a change of vestments, Alice Cooper dives back into a long-dead world for an album that threatens to exchange personality for nostalgia.
Review by ScreamingSteelUS ››
After the cavalcade of risks and fresh sounds that populated Welcome 2 My Nightmare, Alice Cooper decided to circle back around to regular, ol' rock'n'roll of the type that everyone can grasp immediately. I'll admit to some disappointment that Paranormal doesn't quite see Alice reinveinting himself for the umpteenth time, but with that said, this is a 27th album that is enjoyable and doesn't drag, so I'll take it.

In 2005, "Dirty Diamonds" was a great come back to the Garage Rock period of Alice Cooper and "Along Came A Spider", his new album, follows a bit this way with however some good modern musical orientations. One more time Alice produces...

With bands such as Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party occupying high positions in the charts and appearing regularly on MTV2, it only made sense for Alice Cooper to go back to his garage rock roots. After all, much of contemporary popular rock uses exactly...

Alice Cooper boldly announced his continued relevance in the 21st century with the scathing, murderous Brutal Planet - an unprecedentedly heavy album that told us all to sit down, shut up, and hope for death. Sensing the pure genius of this formula, Alice dredged up from hell another album's worth of material done in the same style. Dragontown is another brutal slideshow of death and destruction laid overtop cold, industrial riffs, and therefore should be examined primarily as a counterpart to Brutal Planet.

Trash
7.8
By the time 1989 rolled around, Alice Cooper's last noteworthy album was older than the careers of most of his competition. After a few years of sobriety and a few forays into this glam rock business that was lighting up the charts, Alice finally returned to mainstream success with Trash, a hook-and-synth-heavy concession to the MTV scene that emulated the ritzy, glitzy edge of bands like Mötley Crüe.

Constrictor didn't bring Alice much success, at least not as much as the subsequent albums in his glam metal phase, but this album did set him back on a steady, comprehensible path after years of self-destructive behavior and free-wheeling musical...

DaDa
6.0
I can't remember ever feeling so misled by an opening track. The title track of DaDa is a dark and terrifying soundscape of clanking, pounding, machine noises and audio samples (including a doll's voice) with space-age synths leering overhead. "DaDa" is easily one of the most interesting and unorthodox pieces of music in Alice Cooper's discography, and by the first 30 seconds I was all geared up for a full album's worth of chilling ambient music. No matter how many times I listen to DaDa, I still get disappointed by the reality.
