Sonisphere Finland - Thunderstorm Casualty Deceased

Original news, posted on 08.08.2010

A severe thunderstorm hit Sonisphere Festival in Pori, Finland this afternoon (Sunday 8th) at approximately 16h00. Strong gusts of freak wind damaged the stages and knocked down tents and fences. Approximately 40 people were injured, two of them seriously so. The injured people are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

Sonisphere Festival series producer Stuart Galbraith said: "Our first thoughts go out to the injured people and we sincerely hope they will have a full recovery."

The second stage was damaged beyond repair and to guarantee the safety of the audience, artists and crew the authorities closed the stage. The storm damaged Mötley Crüe's equipment behind repair, forcing their show to be unfortunately cancelled. Iggy Pop did play, performing an acoustic four-track set on the main stage, while the Sonisphere crew worked hard behind the scenes to dry everything out and make repairs to damage across the site.

Having borrowed kit from Slayer, Alice Cooper is performing a full set on the main stage and Iron Maiden's show will also perform a full set, going on stage at approximately 21h50 and playing until approximately 23h50. The police and city authorities have agreed to allow Iron Maiden to finish later than originally planned.

"We're doing everything we can to ensure that the show can take place. The show will run so long as it can run safely." said Stuart Galbraith.

A speedy recovery to those injured! We can only hope the attending Metal Storm crowd is alright.

A Sound Of Thunder - West Memphis Three Benefit Single

Official press release

Metal band A Sound of Thunder has written and recorded the song "Justice At Last" for and about the West Memphis Three. The song is released on May 10th, available on iTunes and at all major digital music outlets, as a very special charity single benefiting the WM3. 100% of proceeds will go to the West Memphis Three Legal Defense Fund.

In 1993, shortly after three eight-year-old boys were found murdered in West Memphis, Arkansas, police arrested Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley and charged the three teenagers with murder based solely upon an error-filled and police-coerced false confession, extracted from 16-year-old Jessie Misskelley Jr. After 12 hours of questioning, without counsel or parental consent, mentally disabled Jessie Misskelley repeated back to the police what he was told to say.

There was no other physical evidence, no weapon, no motive, and no connection to the victims. Instead, prosecutors terrified and inflamed the shell-shocked community ed.]. Jessie Misskelley recanted his statement immediately upon being released to his family, stating that the police forced, via threat and the lure of money, the story he told, but it was too late. Misskelley, Jason Baldwin and Damien Echols, known as The West Memphis Three, were arrested ? then convicted of murder.

Stunningly, Jason Baldwin, 16 at the time and a model student, was sentenced to life without parole Metallica t-shirts as evidence that he was involved in "satanic activity" and "the trappings of the occult", ed.]; Jessie Misskelley got life plus 40 years, while Damien Echols was sentenced to death. Damien has spent years in solitary confinement awaiting death by lethal injection for a crime neither he nor Jessie nor Jason had anything to do with. The West Memphis Three have been wrongfully convicted for crimes they did not commit.

A Sound of Thunder is a female-fronted heavy metal band from the Washington, DC area. Formed in 2008, A Sound of Thunder has toured the Eastern US playing their brand of classic metal with catchy riffs, powerful vocals, and sing-along choruses, and released their debut EP in March 2010. Social justice has been an interest of the band from the start. "Justice at Last" was written in a fit of anger and outrage one late night after watching the film Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills, a documentary about the West Memphis Three. The music and lyrics of the song cover the range of emotion evoked by the case itself, from sadness to anger, and even hope.

Alabama Thunderpussy - Call It A Day

Alabama Thunderpussy guitarist Erik Larson has posted the following statement regarding the band:

"It's been a very quiet 2008 from us here in ATP thus far. I know there has been speculation and uncertainty about exactly what the status of the band is, and our apologies go out to y'all for being MIA. Finally, I'm able to give you an update.

The beginning of 2008 brought yet more upheaval in the saga that is this band, when Kyle Thomas left the group to focus on his family and the impending Exhorder reunion. The remaining four of us had a band meeting and after serious discussion, decided to take a much deserved/needed few months hiatus to regroup and focus on home life and other individual projects. The "few months" seemed to flow into a bit longer as the summer progressed and we all dug deeper into our lives as individuals outside of ATP.

Well, we finally regrouped and after much deliberation and thoughtful discussion, we have decided to end the band. There are no hard feelings between us and no bullshit politics. It's pretty much just the end of an era. To quote George Harrison, all things must pass. And so after 12+ yrs of solid ATP mayhem, we call it a day. We can't thank all of you enough for the tireless and seemingly endless support and friendship we received from you over the years, it was really fucking amazing and appreciated more than you know. Each one of us are still very active and involved in creating music and art and we hope you will bless us with your continued support of our individual endeavors. So if you would, raise your drink of choice in our honor and toast to the future."

Amon Amarth - Video Recording For Twilight Of The Thunder God

Amon Amarth have posted the following on their official website regarding work on a new video clip:

"We recently returned from Poland after shooting the first video for the upcoming album "Twilight of the Thunder God". The video will be for the title track.

We joined efforts with the Polish team, Group 13 and director Dariusz Szermanowicz for "Twilight of the Thunder God" and filmed it on the old Viking site, Jomsborg, home of the Jomsvikings in Wolin, Poland.

Our brothers from Jomsvikings traveled from far and wide, places like Poland, Germany, Belgium, England, Australia and USA to be part of this great video.

It seemed that the Thunder God was on our side when shooting the video because a hurricane/storm passed through the area during the day, creating the chaotic and violent atmosphere we were hoping for. It was the toughest conditions we ever recorded a video in, blood and sweat, quite literally both, were part of the making. But we don't mind getting our hands dirty and metal was never supposed to be "nice". In fact we couldn't have wished for a more fitting video shoot for this song, being the Ragnarök and all!

We want to thank Igor for making this possible, Blodhvitnir Meldric and Sana, the Group 13 crew for their professional work and of course the Jomsvikings for being made of steel!

The album and video "Twilight of the Thunder God" will make its debut in September."

A series of photos from the video shoot can be seen here.

Thunderstone - New Lineup Confirmed

Speculation around the line-up of Finland's Thunderstone has come to an end. The band has decided upon a new vocalist and keyboarder. While people thought that tour vocalist Tommi "Tuple" Salmela would gain permanent duties with the band, this has turned out not to be the case. The new member behind the microphone is Sweden's Rick Altzi, who some may know through his recent work with At Vance. As for the band's tour keyboarder Jukka Karinen, he has been signed to the band for a permanent position.

Here is a comment regarding Tuple from bassist Titus Hjelm: "There was no drama with Tuple. It was clear to everybody from the beginning that the deal was for the tour only and then we would check the situation again. At the end of the day we were just more comfortable with Rick's voice and we didn't want to make any compromises in this issue. Tuple is an awesome singer and we are forever indebted to him for doing the tour with us and taking us through some hard times. And we will certainly drink vodka with him in the future also!"

A full article about the new line-up can be read from this link at Thunderstone's official website.

Thunderstone - Lineup Changes Announced

The following update was posted on Thunderstone official website:

"We are sad to announce that Pasi Rantanen and Kari Tornack are no longer part of Thunderstone. Due to personal reasons and a visible lack of motivation on their part we saw it best to part with the guys, although the decision was not easy and the timing perhaps the worst possible. Everything was done in good spirits and we thank the guys for an unbelievably great and fun seven years and wish them all the best in their private endeavors.

However, the first priority for us was not to let our fans down even in a situation like this. Therefore, we will go on with the upcoming
co-headlining tour with Nocturnal Rites as planned. And we are most proud to announce two incredible musicians who agreed to fill in for the tour on such a short notice. On keyboards we will have none other than legendary JENS JOHANSSON, the crazy Swede and a long-time friend from Stratovarius. The vocal duties will be handled by the incredible-sounding TOMMI 'TUPLE' SALMELA who in recent years has shared the vocals with Marco Hietala in the classic Finnish metal outfit Tarot. As you can probably imagine, we are more than thrilled to have these guys on board. Book your tickets NOW!!!"
